We all know about the system's traps: it constantly creates barriers for non-profit organizations. We see this in delayed funding, the mismatch between expected impact and the actual operational resources provided, and the control exerted over priorities through the availability of funds.

In recent years, this control has tightened around the core of our mission—restricting language and prohibiting support for vulnerable communities and uncomfortable, necessary causes, while making funding for essential operating expenses harder to reach.

Against these barriers, our true hope has always been and will always be a solidary, committed community.

That is why we launched Graduadas por Havenly, a fundraising campaign built on community power. Through this campaign, we are sharing the stories and experiences of the women who form Havenly—women sustaining an organization that represents a fresh start for all of us, especially those the system tries to erase, ignore, and keep from building collective power.

✨ You can be part of this new beginning.
Join our campaign, share our stories, and help us continue building community strength and autonomy from the ground up.

What if you had 25 years of experience but had to start your career all over again?

That’s where Fatima found herself after fleeing Sudan and arriving in the United States. She was ready to begin again, but starting over is harder than anyone can imagine.

The Fellowship gave Fatima the tools she needed to rebuild. Today, Fatima gives back to the New Haven community by supporting @fairhavenhealth , where she draws on her background in nutrition and health to help patients.

As Fatima says: “Havenly gave me a bridge to my next chapter. Now I hope we can build that bridge for many more women.”

Will you help us open the door for the next woman? ❤️

Meet Barakatou, a graduate of Cohort 11 🎓

“I’m from Sokodé, a big, vibrant city in Togo, full of people who speak many languages,” she told us. “My life before coming to America was beautiful. I lived with my five children and worked as a baker, making and selling cookies. But something was always missing because my husband was living in the United States. When I came here in 2008, everything changed. I was finally able to live with my whole family.”

But settling into life here wasn’t easy. Despite her determination, she spent more than 20 years in New Haven unemployed. When a friend told her about Havenly, she decided to join, hoping to learn English, build confidence, and finally find a path to work.

This July, she graduated from our fellowship. Today, she is working full-time as a Home Health Aide in West Haven.

The Havenly Fellowship allows mothers to learn English and gain the skills they need to have stable jobs. Please consider giving through the link in our bio so we can keep offering opportunities like this 🧡🔗 taken in New Haven, Connecticut by @havenlynhv

Meet the fellow: Kijitu, Cohort 11 🎓

Kijitu is from Dessie, Ethiopia, where there is a strong sense of community among everyone. She moved to the US in 2024.

“My favorite memory at Havenly is the time we spent laughing together in the classroom and around the kitchen table. I love how we work together as a group, support each other, and create joy in small moments. I’ll never forget how Havenly helped enroll my 4-year-old in daycare. It made a big difference not just for me, but for him too. He’s very happy there and no longer has to stay home alone.”

When you give, you open doors for women like Kijitu and her son. Give today through the link in our bio so more women can build the futures they deserve.

Some moments hold both celebration and goodbye. This was the case as we celebrated the incredible women of Havenly Cohort 12 who graduated from our Fellowship Program while saying goodbye to our cafe. These walls have witnessed years of laughter, education, new friendships, and dreams taking shape.

While we say goodbye to the space that held so many beautiful memories, we are not saying goodbye to the mission we believe in. We will keep walking alongside refugee and immigrant women as they build new opportunities for themselves and their families.

To our Cohort 12 graduates, we are endlessly proud of all you’ve accomplished, and we can’t wait to see where your next chapter takes you. ☁️

Congratulations Cohort 12! 🎉🥳

Meet the Fellows: Sima 🧡🕊️

"My name is Sima and it has been almost four months since I joined Havenly. I came to the United States from Afghanistan seven years ago.

I have the idea of opening an Afghan restaurant since there are not enough restaurants that serve Afghan food, so for me my experience at Havenly has been rich, and through working with Nieda I have learned a lot. I even know how to practice customer service skills by working as a cashier. In the beginning, I was scared and frustrated when a customer approached me, but now I do it very easily.

Since starting Havenly I have changed by talking with different people and gaining more knowledge and experiences. Last year I was mentally exhausted because of what was going on back in Afghanistan, which made me forget about everything in front of me. At that time, I was depressed and stressed and when I found Havenly I said just give it a chance, which really helped me a lot mentally. My favorite part about Havenly has been the nice teachers, and how we all communicate with each other even though the class speaks about four different languages. We find our ways to communicate beyond languages - for example, Kawthar is my best friend and we don't share a language but we found a way to form this friendship. Every memory at Havenly is special, and I will never forget my time here.``

Meet the fellows: Flor 🌼

“My name is Flor and I came to the United States 12 years ago from Ecuador. I am a single mother of two children. Since the day I came to the U.S. I have been working, and in 2018 I started studying for my citizenship and I finished my GED. It was difficult and I was often studying until four in the morning, but I finished it in 9 months.

In Ecuador I worked since I was 15 years old as a domestic employee in the city, my life before coming to the United States was difficult in every way. My father passed away when I was about 3 years old and when I was 8 years old, I decided to separate from my mother and live with my sister. I got pregnant at 17 and when my sister found out she sent me here. I don't know how she did it, but I was on the road for a month, then I was in immigration jail for 8 months and I spent almost my entire pregnancy in there. In the immigration jail I had a very sad and beautiful experience at the same time because there I met people that I would never have met, friends that I still talk to now. Before then I never had friends because I was always playing the role of mother with my nieces and nephews and I never went to school.

This program caught my attention because it seemed that it would help me find better opportunities, and I have learned a lot in terms of cultures and how we share them. The community in Havenly is very happy, it is very beautiful and what I have learned is that each woman has her own essence and is very skilled at something specific – I think if I can't do this, maybe someone else can and she will shine doing it. I see that everyone has something that makes them happy, some art, others singing... I like to listen and if I can contribute something that's fine and if not, then I let myself be carried away by those who know better than me. I see how women have no limits, how Nieda is an example of how she has her children and has done all this, and even she admires me. Havenly is a way to start if you want to continue learning more. That caught my attention and I feel like that's a lot to be thankful for.” by @havenlynhv
