“Sometimes bad things happen to make good things happen” 📚 February Recap: Where the Forest Meets the Stars 📚 -Plot: Glendy Vanderah’s novel “Where the Forest Meets the Stars” begins after ornithologist Jo Teale loses her mother and wins her own battle with cancer. While researching Indigo Buntings, Jo is interrupted by a mysterious, bruised young girl named Ursa who claims to be an alien sent to witness five miracles. Alongside her reclusive neighbor, Jo forms a bond with the girl, leading to a journey of healing, love, and the uncovering of dangerous secrets about Ursa’s past. -Our Review: 5.65/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Our members agreed that February’s book was a nice change in pace, with a fast-moving, dialogue-driven prose. Positive reviews highlighted the book’s integration of hope, despite addressing topics of grief and trauma. Others felt the book lacked depth, with a lackluster plot and unclear takeaway message. Thanks to @newhavenarts for providing the space to reflect on our reading, and thanks also to @havenlynhv for catering our meeting this month with a delicious spread. ✨Save the date for Tuesday, March 24th (East Rock Book Club is turning 2!)✨ Book/meeting details for next month are posted in the Bookclubs group! #eastrock #eastrockbookclub #ctbookstagrammers

We are thrilled to introduce FAIHAA DAFALLA, one of the guest speakers for International Women's Day 2026 on Friday, March 6! “War does not merely expand existing gender-based issues; it weaponizes them, transforming a woman's body and her access to survival into a primary battlefield. While conflict displaces everyone, my experience shows that it uniquely targets women through the systemic use of sexual violence and the intentional destruction of protection systems. This is the silent war that women are forced to fight long after the bullets stop.” Dr. Faihaa Dafalla is a Sudanese physician and public health specialist with over a decade of experience in health systems strengthening, policy development, and international health and currently a Postdoctoral Associate at Yale School of Public Health. She previously served as Director of Health Planning at Sudan’s Federal Ministry of Health, where she led the National Health Sector Recovery and Reform Strategic Plan (2022-2024) and worked closely with partners including UNICEF, WHO, the World Bank, and the EU. Her expertise spans universal health coverage, primary health care, health financing, and post-conflict health system recovery, with a strong focus on equity and SRHR. Dr. Dafalla has led major national and donor-funded initiatives, including managing a $33+ million GAVI health systems support to Sudan, and has served globally as Chair of the Global Academy for SRHR Steering Committee. Born in Saudi Arabia, her family originated in Gazira State and moved back to their home country in 2002 where they resided in the nation’s capital of Khartoum. Registration is required - free and open to the public: https://yaleconnect.yale.edu/oiss/rsvp_boot?id=2316953 Event sponsored by @yaleoiss and CRIW -Collective for Refugee & Immigrant Women's Wellbeing with generous cosponsors: @yalemacmillancenter @havenlynhv @sanctuarykitchenct @elenaslight @cmes.yale @yaleafricanstudies @wwntogether Yale School of Medicine Office of Global Health Education, JCARR - The Jewish Community Alliance for Refugee Resettlement, Yale Postdoctoral Association Belonging Committee, @yalechaplain and Yale University Church.

On Friday March 6, join us for an International Women’s Day celebration, led by CRIW - Collective for Refugee and Immigrant Women’s Wellbeing. This year, we center the lived experiences of women impacted by war and conflict. From Ukraine to Sudan and beyond, women face displacement, discrimination, violence, and loss, while also leading with courage, sustaining families, rebuilding communities, resisting injustice, and imagining peace. The evening honors their strength, voices, and leadership in the most challenging of times. We are honored to welcome Yale international scholars Faihaa Dafalla (Sudan), Yale School of Public Health and Oksana Goroshchuk (Ukraine), Yale School of Medicine in a moderated conversation with Nour Al Zouabi (Syria). The program concludes with a delicious Halal reception celebrating the community, catered by local refugee and immigrant women chefs from Sanctuary Kitchen, Kandaka Sudanese Cuisine and Havenly. REGISTRATION REQUIRED: https://cglink.me/2dA/r2316953. Event cosponsors: Yale Office of Global Health Education, Sanctuary Kitchen, Elena’s Light, JCARR - The Jewish Community Alliance for Refugee Resettlement & Havenly.

Honored to be part of the @havenly_financial_coop_ct ribbon-cutting! I am so impressed and moved by this powerful group of women coming together — each woman has launched small businesses, advocated for those in our community, and been loving neighbors and friends. My definition of entrepreneurship, at its best, has long been: An individual or group who takes a risk on behalf of our community. Thank you Josabeth, María, Sandra, Lorenza, and Isabel!
