Yesterday was the first of the Halton Nature Watch special editions of Hazlehurst's Snap & Social photowalks.

We were joined by the wonderfully knowledgeable Siobhan, an ecologist for Halton Borough Council.

After a cold start we quickly warmed up by rooting through the undergrowth, to find examples of different species of invertebrates and vegetation.

We encouraged the walk participants to upload photos of what they found onto the iNaturalist website.

This will help give ecologists a better idea of what species are present within Halton.

We all agreed that doing this project has definitely helped us see the tiny bugs and arachnids we previously disliked or were scared of in a whole new light.

Siobhan also collected various specimens of fungus to make spore prints with. We're hoping to share some of the results from this on a later date so stay tuned for those!

Not every battle is visible. 🖤

You never really know what someone is carrying, even when they seem absolutely fine on the outside.

World Mental Health Day feels like a good reminder to check in with the people around us.

If you’re having a difficult time at the moment, this is your reminder that you don’t have to explain yourself, pretend you’re fine, or have everything figured out.

And if someone you know has been a bit quieter than usual, a little message to say “I’m thinking of you” can mean more than you realise.

Halton Nature Watch: Halton EcoFest & Looking Ahead

The fourth and final (for now) installment of our Halton Nature Watch blog series is now live on our website! We recap our whirlwind tour across Halton EcoFest, including launching at All Saints Church, hands-on 3D paper woodlouse workshops at Victoria Park Butterfly House, and bandstand activities in Widnes.

Thanks to Culture 26 funding, Hazlehurst Associate Artist @satsuma_creative_works led a special 'Snap & Social' photowalk during EcoFest to help visitors explore park biodiversity. Most of all, we have loved working alongside Naomi from @animalteach and Siobhan from HBC's Environmental Services throughout the entire project—we’ve learned so much from them both!

Halton Nature Watch: Citizen Science & MarketFest

Part 3 of our Halton Nature Watch blog series is now live! In this post, we look back at two distinct events: our Citizen Science Day at All Saints Church in Runcorn and our creative pop-up at Widnes MarketFest @widnesmarket

Our Citizen Science Day brought people together for hands-on microscope exploration and bug recording alongside Animal Teach, HBC Environmental Services, RECORD, and TCV.

Later in the summer, we set up right next to the music stage at Widnes MarketFest for cyanotype printing and cardboard shield bug making—where being part of the wider Culture 26 programme truly enhanced our offer on the day. A huge thank you to our brilliant hosts at both All Saints Church and Widnes Market!

GIANT SLUGS, CYANOTYPES & FESTIVAL FUN!

Part 2 of our Halton Nature Watch blog series is live!

We’re looking back at Halton Fest, where we launched the public side of the project inside a dedicated creative marquee supported by @cultivatehalton

Read all about how @rachaelprime brought Max and Limy—our giant friendly slug sculptures—to life, how Claire’s ‘Slug Grub’ collage workshop saw over 100 creations made, and how even the Mayor stopped by to say hello!

We were also joined by the @hazlehurstcameracollective, who ran a fantastic nature-themed cyanotype activity alongside our full Halton Nature Watch team (@animalteach and HBC’s Environmental Services)—it was brilliant having everyone together under one roof!
