Hi from the marine research station at Kristineberg, 🐟🌊💙where I’m currently doing research and gathering material for a larger body of work.
The question is: What happens when we move beyond the human as the observer?
Why would we do that? And what information might we be missing when we rely primarily on visual and sonic information, rather than embodied ways of sensing and relating to the world?

THIS IS GOING TO BE WILD TO RESEARCH!

I mean, when we talk about listening, we tend to think about hearing, right? But I’m only beginning to realize how much there is to explore, understand, and feel, and how much our perception of the world might actually shift when we start paying attention differently.
A huge thank you to all the brilliant artists, musicians, composers, biologists and researchers thinking together during these days. It’s incredibly valuable to be part of these conversations and to have our perspectives challenged by one another.
Extra thanks to our wonderful artistic researcher and course conductor, Åsa Stjerna, Laurent Duchatelet for the fluorescent sea pens; @maximeve and @ie.konst for the video (and underwater filming!!!)

When AI does the work – what happens to our judgement?⁠

While interviewing our design professor Johan Redström about AI and design, HDK-Valand’s communications officer used AI to help formulate the questions. The professor then used AI to help formulate the answers.⁠

At first, the result seemed perfectly reasonable. But according to Johan Redström, some of the most important points were lost.⁠
⁠

1. The same AI model that answered the interview questions was asked to suggest images, with instructions to illustrate an academic text without resorting to typical stock photography or an overly polemical visual language. Yet the results reveal a number of problematic assumptions. Technology is portrayed as a one-to-one interaction between human and machine, rather than as something social. Both figures are seated, but the man leans forward, engaging with the machine, ready to act.⁠

2. The woman turns away and gazes into the distance. The machine is portrayed differently, too: with the woman, it takes on a childlike appearance, while the man is looking at something more reminiscent of an industrial robot.⁠

Välkommen på vernissage den 3 oktober!

På lördag öppnar vi HDK-Valands examensutställning i Konsthallen. Tio begåvade studenter inom keramikkonst visar sina examensprojekt från våren 2026 – en utställning fylld av spännande verk, material och uttryck.

Utställningen är öppen kl. 13–17, vernissagen börjar kl. 13.30.

Passa också på att ta en sväng förbi Gavelrummen för en sista titt på utställningen med Åke Holms fenomenala terrakottafigurer. Söndag 4 oktober är sista chansen att se den högt lovordade utställningen innan figurerna tackar för sig.

Varmt välkommen till KKAM Museet i helgen, hoppas vi ses!

Congratulations to our colleague @zimmermann_heiner, who has been awarded the Alfred Habermann Prize for his contribution to the field of blacksmithing! 🔥⁠

Heiner is Professor of Craft with a specialization in Metal Art at HDK-Valand. The award recognizes his longstanding work in developing artistic blacksmithing through research and education – including research carried out together with colleague @tbirgersson and many years of developing the Metal Art programme at HDK-Valand, @metalartsweden.⁠
⁠
In his work, Heiner explores blacksmithing as a contemporary medium at the intersection of craft, design and art – combining traditional knowledge with experimentation and new approaches to working with metal.⁠⁠

CAPIm Research Annual · 25–27 September 2026

CAPIms Research Annual ”Epochality: Art and the Limits of the Present” brought together artists, researchers and thinkers for talks, conversations and collective work at the Royal Institute of Art and Epoken in Mölnbo.

Beginning with a keynote by Yuk Hui, the programme has moved between philosophy, artistic practices, histories and situated encounters.

Across the programme, imagining beyond catastrophic thinking was approached not as an abstract exercise, but as something that happens through attention, repetition, interruption, listening and working together.
