In 2006, when YouTube was barely a year old and Netflix was still putting discs in envelopes, CARTUNE XPREZ pressed its first DVD. Back then, experimental animation mostly lived on shelves, in festival queues, and in boxes shipped between friends. CX took it on the road instead, operating as part video label, part live theater, part psychedelic insurrection, carrying cartoon compilations into basements and cinemas across dozens of countries. Over two hundred events and twenty years later, the algorithm has swallowed most of the room. by @header_munging

👹🎨✍️ NEW POSTER ✍️🎨👹

i was incredibly honored when my friend, the sui-generis genius filmmaker James N. Kienitz Wilkins (not on IG) invited me to design an official-unofficial poster for his new feature 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙞𝙨𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙘𝙚𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙙.

The film's milieu—mumblecore midlife crisis indie dramedy about failed artists set entirely in upstate New York—is not dissimilar to that of James' 2019 release 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘗𝘭𝘢𝘨𝘪𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘴, which was also cowritten by Robin Schavoir. But this time James has "shot" the entire script via motion-capture CGI, with all scenes acted out and prerecorded in audio form first, the same way they make Pixar movies.

While this may sound like a troll operation, James (as ever) fully commits to the bit, which gives 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥 a surreal quality, both dreamlike and hyperlucid, totally disinterested in verisimilitude, guaranteed to be mistaken for generative AI by future generations who don't bother to read the fine print.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘥 joins the burgeoning genre of MoCap cinema, alongside 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘍𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘴𝘺: 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘞𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 (2001) and 𝘉𝘦𝘰𝘸𝘶𝘭𝘧 (2007). It also belongs to an even smaller canon of films in which "real" humans live side-by-side with sentient Toons, ala 𝘙𝘰𝘨𝘦𝘳 𝘙𝘢𝘣𝘣𝘪𝘵 or 𝘔𝘰𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘺𝘣𝘰𝘯𝘦. Plus it's full of painfully hilarious observations on how to manage your life after giving up on your dreams of becoming a great artist... Relevant!

🌀Castle Door, created and performed by Walker Caplan and Matt Romein opens this weekend at CultureHub🌀

🏰 We released a few more tickets this morning. Thursday and Friday are sold out, but there are a few tickets left for the Saturday shows. Get them while you still can !!

In this two-person performance, creators Walker Caplan and Matt Romein use and abuse the conventions of confessional monologue theater while using video game engines to puppet emotive 3D avatars, aided by PowerPoint presentations and live camera feeds. Fantasies are corrupted by hijacked imaginations, bodies are mediated through digital boundaries, and emotions are misinterpreted again and again and again.

Friday, March 13th at 7pm SUPR OMEN will launch RINSE: Works in Progress. Doors open at 6:30, tickets are $10, and there will be a chance to converse with artists afterwards over a cash bar.

This quarterly event showcases our community by highlighting artists of all disciplines for 10 minute showings of developing ideas. Inspired by the desire for dialogue across genre, each evening is curated by C. Francis Fisher.

The March 13th program will feature visual artist Lemuel E. Saputra, theatre maker Matt Romein, performance artist Sonya Molansky, and comic writer Natalie Raskin.
