James N. Kienitz Wilkins’s THE MISCONCEIVED is back in NYC! Catch it at Ridgewood’s Low Cinema - only until June 7th. THE MISCONCEIVED is a thought-provoking class critique told through 3-D video-game animation and Pond5 stock music. It follows a failed filmmaker turned carpenter who gets hired by his estranged college buddy, now a successful sculptor renovating the vacation home of his dreams. Tomorrow’s 7:30 PM screening will feature a post-screening Q&A with writer/film programmer Steve Macfarlane, multimedia artist Matt Romein, and the filmmakers. Stay after Saturday’s 7:30 PM screening for a Q&A with the filmmakers. Catch a companion screening of Cool World, intro’d by Steve Macfarlane, tomorrow at 10 PM. Don’t miss THE MISCONCEIVED in theaters! Get your tickets in the link in bio now!

πŸ‘ΉπŸŽ¨βœοΈ NEW POSTER βœοΈπŸŽ¨πŸ‘Ή i was incredibly honored when my friend, the sui-generis genius filmmaker James N. Kienitz Wilkins (not on IG) invited me to design an official-unofficial poster for his new feature π™π™π™š π™ˆπ™žπ™¨π™˜π™€π™£π™˜π™šπ™žπ™«π™šπ™™. The film's milieuβ€”mumblecore midlife crisis indie dramedy about failed artists set entirely in upstate New Yorkβ€”is not dissimilar to that of James' 2019 release π˜›π˜©π˜¦ π˜—π˜π˜’π˜¨π˜ͺ𝘒𝘳π˜ͺ𝘴𝘡𝘴, which was also cowritten by Robin Schavoir. But this time James has "shot" the entire script via motion-capture CGI, with all scenes acted out and prerecorded in audio form first, the same way they make Pixar movies. While this may sound like a troll operation, James (as ever) fully commits to the bit, which gives π˜›π˜©π˜¦ π˜”π˜ͺ𝘴𝘀𝘰𝘯𝘀𝘦π˜ͺ𝘷𝘦π˜₯ a surreal quality, both dreamlike and hyperlucid, totally disinterested in verisimilitude, guaranteed to be mistaken for generative AI by future generations who don't bother to read the fine print. π˜›π˜©π˜¦ π˜”π˜ͺ𝘴𝘀𝘰𝘯𝘀𝘦π˜ͺ𝘷𝘦π˜₯ joins the burgeoning genre of MoCap cinema, alongside 𝘍π˜ͺ𝘯𝘒𝘭 𝘍𝘒𝘯𝘡𝘒𝘴𝘺: π˜›π˜©π˜¦ 𝘚𝘱π˜ͺ𝘳π˜ͺ𝘡𝘴 𝘞π˜ͺ𝘡𝘩π˜ͺ𝘯 (2001) and π˜‰π˜¦π˜°π˜Έπ˜Άπ˜π˜§ (2007). It also belongs to an even smaller canon of films in which "real" humans live side-by-side with sentient Toons, ala π˜™π˜°π˜¨π˜¦π˜³ π˜™π˜’π˜£π˜£π˜ͺ𝘡 or π˜”π˜°π˜―π˜¬π˜¦π˜Ίπ˜£π˜°π˜―π˜¦. Plus it's full of painfully hilarious observations on how to manage your life after giving up on your dreams of becoming a great artist... Relevant! Catch π˜›π˜©π˜¦ π˜”π˜ͺ𝘴𝘀𝘰𝘯𝘀𝘦π˜ͺ𝘷𝘦π˜₯ in Ridgewood at @low_cinema June 1-7. After the 7:30pm screening on Friday, June 5th, I'll be moderating Q+A with James, plus my dear high school friend Matt Romein (@header_munging) who worked with him on the MoCap. Link in bio; π˜›π˜©π˜¦π˜Ί 𝘚𝘒𝘷𝘦π˜₯ π˜‰π˜ͺπ˜₯𝘦𝘯'𝘴 π˜‰π˜³π˜’π˜ͺ𝘯 coming soon!
