If anyone has embodied their own advice, it’s Millie. She has been making it happen with @chicky.ceramics since the jump. The cool thing about these conversations is seeing people voice thoughts they maybe hadn’t before. It seemed like as we spoke Millie was realising all the goals she had already been kicking in her pot making journey (please correct me if I’m wrong).

Alex Sawyer - Author

You may have seen his perfect head of salt and pepper locks popping up as his debut novel ‘Rat Daniels’ sweeps across the literary world.

As someone studying writing, I was extremely curious to ask someone who has had so much success writing a novel how much they planned out a specific theme and constructed a story around it. The answer it turns out… that much. @alexsawyerwriting beautifully speaks to the ideas of how proximity impacts the way we see people and nails (at least from my nostalgic point of view) teenage-hood but he does it through relationships and characters you feel like you have definitely experienced in your own life.

Seeing Amanda’s body of work it’d be pretty easy to assume she is just rolling from one sold out exhibition to the next. Don’t get me wrong, she’s smashing it, but she also speaks extremely candidly about the doubt that can creep in. Farrin Foster’s advice for creatives, horse riding and…life?

I have a confession, choosing this quote was a bit of a cop out... But hey I had to pick one! This was an incredible conversation! So many little nuggets of wisdom from someone so plugged in to the Australian literary scene. More than that though, Farrin has such a layered view of what being a creative means, what the work means and what the process means.

I was lucky enough to host a live artist talk with Jane Smeets and Ben Saunders at @artworxgalleryandgifts10 for their @salafestival show ‘Blue Interpreted’

I try to do as much prep as possible for these podcast episodes but what was amazing what how deeply both Jane and Ben answered my questions.

Such a great time and I am definitely looking forward to doing more of these taken in Artworx Gallery and Gifts - Goolwa by @heaps_creative_pod

Millie Bird - Potter

Most know Millie as @chicky.ceramics the Goolwa based potter (she prefers that to ceramicists or ceramic artist… semantics, you decide).

Millie’s work creates a crystal ball into an alternate dimension; not steam punk but a twisted nostalgia not her own where the cars are all square and the mermaids kinda hate you.

Pots donning flora and oceanelia, alive and more increasingly dead speak to the pain and elegance of existence.

Sometimes the timing of things is just perfect. As I write this Nathan (the face behind @sticksbysticks ) is currently in the midst of a week combing the Fleurieu coastlines from dusk til dawn, picking up trash and caring for the places he cherishes. In our podcast conversation it became blatantly obvious how much Nathan deeply cares. About his community, his craft and his place in them both.

Living at the intersection of creative expression and service, Nathan’s throwback style is reminiscent of your local artisans driving around in a beat-up ute, flowing locks with a delivery in the back (I don’t think Nathan delivers but I’m sure he would if you asked). These are the people that deserve our support. Chains are for bikes, not shopping. Get around your local makers. Get around Operation pickup sticks. Get around a hand shaped surfboard.

Farrin Foster - Writer, Editor & Occasional Filmmaker

Something I’ve been thinking about a lot from this amazing chat with Farrin was how she manages to balance an unbridled enthusiasm for the contemporary Australian literature scene while being incredibly considered and thoughtful about her role and responsibilities as editor of @splinterjournal (probably due to her impressive career through a wide array of writing forms).

Take a second and think about another podcast that mentions socialism, horse riding advice, tennis and an interview with Grug… you can’t, can you?

This chat was an absolute blast and so inspiring and informative for anyone who makes anything. Get around it whenever you get your pods, just search @heaps_creative_pod
