THE SEA KNOWS HIS NAME

Some people carry the sea with them long after they’ve come ashore.

His hands remember the weight of the day’s catch.
His face tells stories the tide has kept.
The salt, the wind and the years have shaped him as surely as the waves.

The Sea Knows His Name is part of Blue Interpreted, on display throughout August at ArtworX Gallery, Goolwa, as part of the SALA Festival. Come and discover how artists have each interpreted the colour blue in their own unique way.

Inspiration in familiar places. 🌷

Thank you to @heaps_creative_pod latest episode for encouraging me to capture moments like these. @_brotherfish talks about finding inspiration in familiar settings and it was all I needed to hear.

Tom Ling - Photographer & Educator

Before we sat down to chat Tom made me the perfect slow drip coffee and that somehow ended up being (by comparison) the worst part of the whole experience. Conversations like this are why I started this podcast and why I absolutely love doing it.

Tom is just a super friendly dude: dad, surfer, photographer, teacher but such a profoundly deep thinker. I don’t think a single question didn’t leak into something more esoteric. And not in a woo woo way either (although that is something I condone), just in a way that shows the importance of making and engaging in a creative practice. Despite the austerity of his practice, Tom isn’t just sitting in a cave taking photos of the wall (though I’m sure they’d be stunning), he is constantly documenting his hometown and its people. He’s also worked on some unreal collaborations over the years; check out his website as there’s no where near enough room to list them all here.

I strongly suggest everyone clear two hours from their schedule. One hour to listen for the pure joy, and another to listen again with a notepad and pen.

I’m feeling a lot of excitement right now after finishing a big commission—1m x 1.5m, the largest work I’ve completed to date. I’m really happy with how it’s turned out, but the client hasn’t seen it yet, so I’m holding off on sharing it here for now. I’ll post about it further down the line once it’s with them.
For now, I’m moving straight onto the next piece. This video is me completing the underpainting—working through the colour palette, figuring out where the focus is going to land, and just getting a feel for how the work is going to come together. It’s early stages, but there’s something satisfying about this part of the process. I was listening to the latest episode of the Heaps Creative Podcast while working on this—@heaps_creative_pod if you’re interested in checking it out.
More on the commission soon.

Had a great conversation recently with Tyler Jackson for the Heaps Creative Podcast. Tyler’s based on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Australia and he’s on his own journey exploring different forms of creativity—interviewing creatives from all walks to hear about their experiences and processes. We talked about the studio, the work, and what keeps me showing up every day.
If you’re interested, you can listen on Spotify (link in bio) or follow along at @heaps_creative_pod on Instagram.
