Deaf and hard-of-hearing kids deserve a voice in their own journey. As they grow, they can be part of the choices about how they communicate, the technology they use, and what access looks like for them.

Delaney recently received her first cochlear implant and shares her journey from a 12-year-old’s perspective—the choices, challenges and exciting moments along the way.

To Delaney, “Hearing My Way” means having a voice in her own path and finding what works best for her.

ACTIVATION DAY!! 🦻

Not gonna lie… it sounded SO weird at first 🐭😂 but I could hear!!

Definitely have a lot to get used to, but it was pretty cool.

Can’t wait to see what it sounds like as my brain adapts✨

Beauty and the Beast!! 🌹💛

My mom and I went to see Beauty and the Beast at @segerstromarts and it was SO GOOD!!

I already knew how to sign BEAUTY, but I learned how to sign BEAST too! 🤟

We went to a show that had ASL interpreters and captions! I even got to wear these cool glasses that showed captions right in front of my eyes! I used them for the first half, but then switched to watching the captions on the screen instead.

And at the end the whole cast did Deaf applause!! 🥹🤟

I thought it was really cool that there were so many different ways to enjoy the show!

FIRST DAY BACK FULL TIME! 📚🍎

I’m officially back!! I’m so excited for in person classes and being with my friends all day. Which means my hearing is about the same as it was pre-surgery.🎉

Mom here -

At the beginning of the year, we made the decision to give Delaney’s brain time to adjust to hearing electronically without the added pressure of trying to learn through listening all day.

Her school gave us the perfect balance: four classes through virtual independent study, where she could read her instruction, and then had Math, ASB and lunch on campus so she could stay connected to her friends and school.

Now that her hearing is similar to pre-surgery levels, she’s ready to be back full time! 🥹

We are so thankful for a school, teachers and counselors who supported her and gave her exactly what she needed during this transition.

the part of getting a cochlear implant you don’t really see… the homework 😂😭

I have to teach my brain what all these new sounds mean.

My “homework” is streaming TV shows, listening to audiobooks and doing listening apps like i-Angel Sound. Sometimes I’m really good at it and sometimes it’s HARD 😅

today… 100% on my single word sounds!! 🙌🏼

lots of practice. lots of listening. little by little 💕

TURN UP THE BASS 🔊🎶

I kept enough of my natural hearing my CI is getting an upgrade 🎉

This little piece that goes in my ear helps me hear the low sounds I can still hear naturally, while my cochlear implant does its thing too.

So basically… natural hearing + cochlear implant = hybrid hearing 🦻🤯

Still pretty cool that I get to use the hearing I had before surgery AND my CI at the same time.

Time to test some good music 🎶

Part 3 ❤️

After finding out Delaney still had some natural hearing left, she immediately wanted to know what it would sound like if she put her hearing aid back on.

So of course we had to try it when we got home. 😂

Her reaction 😂❤️

And yes… if you’re wondering why she needed a cochlear implant if she can still hear with a hearing aid, we’ll get to that... ❤️

So… did Delaney keep any of her natural hearing after cochlear implant surgery?

She did. 🥹🙏✨

Hearing preservation was something we hoped for from the very beginning. It played a role in the surgeon we chose and the cochlear implant technology we selected — but we also knew there were absolutely no guarantees.

That’s why getting to actually test her natural hearing after surgery felt like such a big moment.

Which leads us to Part 3… because of course Delaney had to try it. 😂👂

Can I hear all 6?! 👂🏼🎧

These are called Ling Sounds! They’re 6 little sounds that help check if I’m hearing all the different pitches I need for speech. Now that my cochlear implant is activated, I practice hearing each one without looking 👀

Still kinda crazy that my brain has to relearn all of this! 😜
