Time to lock in, get your body dialled and feel confident to take on whatever you have planned for it this ski season.

Stay tuned for ski programs coming soon!

Skiers I am sure you all have been in this single leg position at some point. And hopefully the majority of you have been able to save it or control it enough to bail out smoothly. Unfortunately a fair amount of you have potentially strained muscles/tendons and sprained or ruptured ligaments in this position. This commonly happens due to rapidly overloading one leg as well as hyperextending where a large amount of forces get directed behind the knee. Add in some rotational forces and you’re gonna have a bad time…So why not train different contraction rates, different loading patterns with some rotational work. When this does happen to you, give your body a fighting chance to combat the demand being placed on it.

Bench press is great and all…and this is definitely not a replacement. It’s just not all about having a massive bench press to be more athletic. It’s more about how well you can contract and relax your musculature at different points as well as your timing and synchronicity is. Plenty of riders can’t bench much, but they know how to move smoothly and contract/relax at the right moments to absorb, dissipate and redirect impacts efficiently. One way we can train this is by manipulating tempos and range of motions of our exercises.

So if you are feeling a bit robotic in your movements and you want to have some capacity in a multitude of ranges then try these out!

If you want to thrash about looking like a fish that just got yanked from the sea by all means, fishy on. If not, then try to incorporate movements where you have to keep tension while performing dynamic movements. This is the bases for moving well and with intention.

Here is an easy way to alter two classic core exercises - bicycles & mtn climbers into a more athletic/functional exercise.

Bicycles - Keep constant pressure on the med ball throughout the movement. Try to be smooth and never lose engagement/ tension. If it’s easy then use a heavier ball and squeeze harder!

Mtn Climbers - Get your feet sliding - Use sliders, towels or socks on a hard surface. Keep constant tension and try to be smooth. Do not lose engagement/tension. If it gets too easy, then up your pace and press your feet into the ground harder as well as your hands.

If you have been struggling with your pop up then this may be the exercise for you! For this method it doesn’t matter if you can’t do a push-up or hold a plank. You can use different thickness of bands to help take off body weight allowing you to move through the proper ranges of motion in the correct pattern. As you build strength and power in other exercises to complement this move you can use lighter bands for less assistance. Practice this at different speeds and build this motor pattern in so when your drop in is second nature. Then you can just think about holding on for dear life or smacking that lip Whooopowwww💥

Here is how I program squat patterns for snowboard athletes. Go from big ranges of motions with light medium weights all the way to shorter more sport specific ranges with heavier loads right up to just before the season. Try to still incorporate big range of motion supplemental exercises to keep up your conditioning in those vulnerable ranges. This format can keep you injury resistant, develop positional strength and set you up well to add in power exercises to maximize your pop 👊🏽

- Do you like to skate as much as possible but your body is struggling to keep up?
- Do you have some physical limitations preventing you from getting that new trick dialled in?
- Do you live in a place where it’s difficult to skate year round?
- Are you not interested in doing traditional strength training exercises and you want something more interactive like you sport? - Do I sound like a used car salesman on an infomercial?

Well, this type of training may be for YOU!

Stay tuned for more skate specific exercises 💀

If you want to feel stronger and more stable on your mtb or moto you need to make sure your scapulas (shoulder blades) are functioning correctly and efficiently. If these are deficient you will likely end up death gripping the bars to make up for that instability. This results in rigidity, “muscling” the bike around, arm pump/ fatigue and less connection between your bike and your body. Add these into your training and let the bigger muscles in your back do the work so you can maintain good riding technique through any terrain.

The mtb riders I work with utilize these sport specific exercises while in season. Read below to see if this is for you!

Often throughout the riding season your training slightly drops off and your sport skill progresses substantially. Eventually you start out riding your physical abilities and things are getting sketchy.

If you find that may be the case and you want to catch your body up. This would be a useful period to dedicate your training time to the sport you want to progress at.

Use these exercises to sharpen up your sport specific positions so you can cut up the loose fall riding season. #mtb #mtbfitness #fitness #gym #training by @hectic.bk

It’s not always about having a super strong and rigid braced core. If you want to twist, rotate, swing your hips and torso then you may want to add these into your training routine.

These exercises are not meant to develop a ton of strength in those “core” zones. But more so to teach your body to contract and relax smoothly with proper synchronicity while rotating. This can likely make you flow easier, increase your performance and make twisting under greater velocities safer 👊🏽

3 sets of 5-10 reps of each at the end of your training session and you will be swinging off the horse in no time.

After the broken leg boot training post I received messages from individuals who decided to pay the fun tax with their arms instead. The general requests were: Exercises that could be set up easily in the gym or at home, functionality and no boring machine work. So here a few to start with.

Banded Pistol Squats: 3 x 8-15 reps
SL Sprinter DB Hip Thrusts: 3 x 8-15 reps Per Side
Banded DB Slider Lateral Lunges: 3 x 8-15 reps Per Side
Weighted SL Rotational Sit-Ups 3 x 5-10 Per Side

Don’t worry about holding the weight in the same hand when you do each side of these exercises. This is only temporary and you won’t create enough of an imbalance to throw your body off.

I will eventually put up a YouTube vid with a large variety of exercises you can do while you are injured.
