The Energetics of the Bitter Taste

The traditional medicine systems understood that each taste has specific effects on the human body.

The bitter taste carries some of the most important medicinal qualities of all the tastes, however in excess it can lead to certain aggravations and imbalances.

The six tissue states framework has its roots in ancient Greek humoral medicine, which recognised the qualities of hot, cold, moist and dry.

It was developed further by American herbalists during the 19th century, particularly the Physiomedicalists, and Joseph M. Thurston was the first to articulate the full sixfold classification in 1900.

It is a good example in the western herbal tradition of the naturopathic attempt to understand and treat the underlying 'terrain', or in this case the tissue state, rather than treating the specific disease or its symptoms as such.

Glycerine Vs Alcohol 🌿

Alcohol is generally a more effective solvent to ensure that the different herbal compounds are extracted well.

Glycerines are indicated in cases where alcohol cannot be tolerated at all in any amount, for example with gastritis, stomach ulcers and liver disease, or for strict religious reasons.
