The large site stretches from inland hills all the way down to the beach of the Indian Ocean near Plettenberg Bay. The gardens vary from undulating lawns and berms with wavy grasses to pristine natural eastern cape thicket bush, marrying the architecture with the natural duneland. A tennis court, a pavilion on a lake and a long sinuous boardwalk to the beach give a sense of the human touch in the wider coastal landscape. At the foot of the Simonsberg Mountain, 400 meters above the Knorhoek valley with an endless panarama of sky and countryside, the extraordinary setting of Quoin Rock wine estate demanded a similarly extraordinary garden. Invited to offer a design interpretation, garden designer Franchesca Watson remembers the process distinctly. ‘The owner was not in the country at the time and I was battling with how I would allow my ideas to speak for themselves across such a distance,’ she says. Franchesca commissioned her first 3D presentation and in anticipation sent it off to him. He responded with only two words, ‘Bravo! Proceed!!’ Read more online about the incredible process behind creating this garden and the plant palettes that are as big and bold as they are gentle and layered. www.houseandgardenuk.co.uk Images by Elsa Young and words by me. Set between the two most extreme climatic regions in the Northern Cape Province in South Africa, the gardens at Mauritzfontein are a green oasis sandwiched between the Kalahari desert to the north and the vast, arid Karoo to the south. An area devoid of surface water, named ‘the land of thirst’ or ‘thirstlands’, by its’ original inhabitants, the Khoisan people. This is the parched, immense landscape surrounding the 22-acre gardens at Mauritzfontein. Thank you @houseandgardenuk and @clarefostergardens for the wonderful commission 📸 Connall Oosterbroek & Joag Van Rooyen Read more about the history of the garden in ‘Mauritzfontein: The Story of a Karoo Garden’ by Paul Duncan & Arthur Meninigke. #writer #africangarden #heritagegarden #southafrica #africa #karoo #garden #gardentravel #magazine #naturewriter #gardenwriter by @heidibertish

All about bringing nature up close, this architects home on the slopes of Table Mountain in Cape Town immerses itself in its’ natural surroundings. Gardens of varying sizes grow on multiple levels. Indigenous trees, over-sized ferns, mosses and emerald-colored shade planting thrive inside open glass atriums within the home. Plants cascade over building edges, softening and blurring boundaries between building and nature. More about this incredible garden project in the Sept issue @houseandgardensa. The magic began on a tractor ride with hay bails, parosols, glittery flappy flags and luminescent people... on through prickly pear meadows and fields of lavender to the the new and beautifully appointed fynbos cottages set into an all-african landscape of aloes, kokkerboom and circular pools... onwards through vineyards under big summery skies to the fragrance room and more magic.... crammed into bubbling bottles of flower-infused wine, roaring fire pits and the best party beats. Thank you @babylonstoren it was luminous 📷@connbertish taken in Babylonstoren by @heidibertish

Home in chilly Cape Town and reminiscing about hours spent wondering Bevis Bawa’s tropical Sri Lankan garden- Brief. Here a few pics whilst walking the many pathways, ogling perfectly positioned pots, circular pools, quirky features and planted walls hung heavy with lush foliage. With his natural flare for space and proportion, hedonistic spirit and larger than life personality, the experience of the garden is as much intimate sanctuary as it is grown-up outdoor playground. After his death in 1992 Bevis Bawa bequeathed the estate to his landscape designer and head gardener Dooland de Silva. I was lucky enough to catch up with Dooland about the fascinating creation of the garden and the stories behind the man himself. Happy week everyone! #bevisbawa #kingofthejungle #briefgarden #keepingthedreamalive #srilankangardens #srilanka #tropicalgarden #garden #magic by @heidibertish
