Are you ready to query?

I know how easy it is to want to rush into this stage. I also know a lot of writers who are ready but too burnt out to try again. It’s so easy to talk yourself out of it.

But if you’ve written a manuscript, gotten feedback on it, revised, and feel happy with it, it’s time to take the next step!

This checklist will help you query without angst and worry.

Save it for whenever you’re ready.

And if you need a critique or want to strategize about which manuscript to send out, or have questions about finding an agent, I’m here. šŸ’› by @heidifiedler

If you’re writing a children’s book, you need to know what kind of book you’re writing. Then check if your manuscript will appeal to kids that age!

Two super important steps!

Board books are for ages 0-3. They are read aloud and gnawed on. They often touch on basic concepts like ABCs or themes like family and daily life.

Picture books are almost always read aloud. They can be fiction or nonfiction, quiet and poetic, or loud and silly. They need to capture readers’ attention even when they have the wiggles.

Early readers are designed to help kids ages 5-9 learn to read. Every detail is chosen to help kids become more independent. But they can’t be boring. Reading is hard work and these books need to make it so fun that kids will keep going.

Chapter books are read independently and they’re about characters who are doing things on their own. These books are usually for ages 7-9. They cover themes like friendship but also more sophisticated topics like jealousy.

Middle grade books are for ages 9-12. The stories are more complex, the stakes are higher, and the adventures are bigger. These books have themes like light versus dark or belonging.

Beyond that there’s YA, new adult, and adult.

Sure there are crossovers and blurred lines. We love those books.

But before you query or submit, you need to be clear where your book fits in.

Send me a message if you’re not sure what kind of book you’re writing and we can figure it out together! šŸ’› by @heidifiedler

Right now I’m writing a picture book. It’s pretty far along but it would still be easy to get overwhelmed and never tackle the revisions.

These are the exact steps I take every time I revise.

They help me stay focused and make progress.

I also try to bring a creative spirit to the revision process. I brainstorm possibilities, play around with different options, and try to have FUN—the same way I do when I’m writing my first draft.

Need a fresh set of eyes on your work?

I’m booking a couple more manuscript critiques this year. Send me a message and we’ll figure out your next steps together. šŸ’› by @heidifiedler

Your life might not look exactly like mine.

But every single person I work with is writing DESPITE the uncertainty of publishing and the impossible demands of modern life.

You don’t have to write a book. It’s totally ok if you want to take it off your list and forget about. It’s ok. I promise!

But if you dream of writing a book, let me give you a little hope.

I write in the scraps of my day. In the car. On my phone. After bedtime.

I look for opportunities to write.

I let my mind wander.

I play with possibilities.

I write about things that make me happy, so I want to spend time with my project.

I make the writing process fun and easy for myself.

I let everything count. Taking notes. A line of dialogue. A character name. 10 minutes in my journal.

It all adds up to real progress.

Writing a book isn’t easy but I know if I can do it, you can too.

And it’s easier together.

I offer critiques and coaching sessions. I work with everyone from total newbies to Caldecott winners. My clients get agents, win awards, and find ease and joy in the creative process so they can keep going.

Send me a message if you’re stuck and we’ll figure out your next steps together. šŸ’› by @heidifiedler
