This comic was inspired by working with my editor/writer friend Heidi Fiedler @heidifiedler.
.
I loved Heidi's feedback on my picture book dummy. It was constructive, informative, and gave a lot of good points to improve the manuscript.
.
At this point in my creative career, I am not writing my own kid lit stories. I have had a strong pull to work on comics and essays about my journey of single/co-parenting, overcoming divorce, and starting a new life in the last few years.
.
However, I would always love to ILLUSTRATE books by other authors. Editors and art directors, I am ready for you! My style, attention to emotions and inner world, daydreaming, and creating imaginary words is perfect for children's books!

I wrote this poem two years ago, while sitting with a group of other mothers. We were all devastated by the news and images we were seeing on the other side of the world of parents losing their children, and having to search for them in the ashes. We all gathered to talk and write about it together, instead of doing it alone.

So many of us continue to feel fear, sadness, and anger about the suffering of other mothers who are just like us, and their children. We all want to do all that we can to channel those feelings effectively. We all struggle to know how.

Many of us mothers are also already exhausted from the constant pressure to come up with original, individual solutions to so many things that are clearly collective problems. How to keep elementary school children safe from gun violence. How to keep young adults safe as they learn how to use their voices to call for peace. How to live in a society that does not center our most vulnerable.

I've learned that writing poetry can help me to feel less helpless in the face of all this. Even though I don't consider myself a poet, really. As someone who trained as a journalist, it took me a long time to understand that the value of this writing form comes not through its ability to make a point and support it, necessarily, but through the creation of its own anchor points and patterns, the tensile quality of its strength. Poetry allows a more web-like interweaving of ideas, ideas that resist the notion of One Right Story. At the same time, it is a form that allows us to decry the very real forces that want to tear us all apart. As such, it is a powerful political tool in its own right. Even if it doesn't seem that way at the time.

This poem was recently published in Nebula Notebook, a publication run by @heidifiedler, who is a tireless champion of mother-writers everywhere. This felt like a good a time as any to re-share it here.

If you have other poems that are bringing you comfort in this time, please share them below. I'd love to read them. ❤️‍🩹

Welcome Under the Moon Gate, Heidi Fiedler, the author of Quickening: The Art of Being a Creative Mother. During our conversation, Heidi and I talk about what creative life looks like in the margins of motherhood—how dreams are re-envisioned, and how to surrender to the grief (and magick) of that transformation.
