Sugar maples. 😍 by @heidimcoudal

Loving the greens and purples of today’s little autumn harvest. Shishitos came late this year. Eggplants were small. Still in love with Brad’s Atomic Grape tomatoes. 💚💜 by @heidimcoudal

My baby is 26! Sending our love from Chicago to Los Angeles wishing Spencer the happiest birthday weekend! We love you. We’re proud of you! You’re an amazing young man. Enjoy the weekend! ❤️❤️

I’m sure my parents didn’t always feel the same way, but I do love hanging out with our grown kids.

Escaping to Wisconsin on the weekends is so therapeutic for me. I relax more. I cook more. I garden, find projects, do nothing, spend time outside, and slow down enough to notice what’s around me.

This weekend was filled with delicious food, great conversations, chilling on the hammock, hikes, the county fair, watching dozens of hummingbirds dart among my bright red flowers, and making an earth altar on our bedroom patio with my girls. Love you two so much. 🍄‍🟫🍃

I Worried by Mary Oliver

I worried a lot. Will the garden grow, will the rivers flow in the right direction, will the earth turn as it was taught, and if not how shall
I correct it?

Was I right, was I wrong, will I be forgiven,
can I do better?

Will I ever be able to sing, even the sparrows can do it and I am, well,
hopeless.

Is my eyesight fading or am I just imagining it,
am I going to get rheumatism,
lockjaw, dementia?

Finally I saw that worrying had come to nothing.
And gave it up. And took my old body
and went out into the morning,
and sang. by @heidimcoudal

33 years of laughter, love, adventures, a beautiful family, and so much happiness. I’m incredibly grateful for this life we’ve built together. ❤️xoxo by @heidimcoudal

We had a wonderful weekend in Newport —touring Gilded Age mansions, hiking through a bird sanctuary, visiting a vineyard, exploring beautiful gardens, taking in the views of the ocean, and eating plenty of chowder, oysters, lobster rolls, and more.

But the real reason we were there was to celebrate our nephew Girard and his love, Jenna. Their beautiful, breezy beach wedding made for a fun family weekend. Congrats to the newlyweds! We’re so happy for you both! We all missed Isabelle who was in her college bestie’s wedding. ❤️❤️ by @heidimcoudal

One of our favorite things is stumbling upon a hidden treasure when we’re traveling. We’re in Newport for a wedding, driving past all the Gilded Age mansions, when we discovered an Open sign.

This was Doris Duke’s former home, complete with a beautiful formal garden and kitchen garden. No one lives here now, so I’m sure it isn’t quite what it was in her day, but anyone who knows me knows I will always stop for a kitchen garden tour. by @heidimcoudal

We spent the day at the Obama Presidential Center, and I left feeling both hopeful and nostalgic for what now feels like a golden era.

Every installation reminded me of how far we’ve fallen since Obama left office — not because of politics, but because of the values his presidency represented: hope, optimism, decency, empathy, and the belief that we are stronger when we support and defend one another rather than tear each other down.

The OPC itself is spectacular. I loved the installations, the architecture and design, the art, the furniture, the garden (!!), the landscaping — every single detail. It’s thoughtful, beautiful, inspiring, and incredibly well done. They it with class, style, and impeccable attention to design.

The Center doesn’t just look back on his presidency, but calls on all of us to participate, get involved, stand up for one another, and to remember that democracy depends on ordinary people choosing to make it work.

I miss those days. I want that sense of hope back. But maybe the real message is that we can’t just wait for it to come back. We have to do something about it.

Bravo!
