I love this episode so much. Comment ā€œMALIBUā€ and I’ll send you the link ā¤ļø

Today on A Seat at the Table, we meet Sebastian Pourrat.

Basque Country is one of the most fiercely protected food cultures on earth with more Michelin stars per capita than anywhere else, and a language older than most countries.

This week, we brought a piece of it to Malibu.

Featuring Sofie Roelens & Sebastian Pourrat

Food labels tell you very little. The people, the process, and the questions you ask tell you everything.

I’m so happy to finally share this one!!

On this episode of A Seat at the Table, I spend a day in Oaxaca with chef Kaelin Ulrich Trilling at Seasons of My Heart, from the market to the fire to the family table.

As a gift from me to you, I put together a free Solo in Oaxaca guide. Comment OAXACA and I’ll send you both the episode and the guide, or find the full episode at the link in my bio.

If there’s one thing I recommend from my time in Oaxaca, it’s to stay here. From the minute I landed, the hospitality at @granabnb was beyond anything I expected. It truly felt like I was staying in someone’s home. šŸ“ Grana B&B, Oaxaca City

Everywhere we go, Vince has to jump in the ocean and I wouldn’t have it any other way, even if we have an hour long drive home with no change of clothes. I used to dream of this so you’ll never hear me complain. šŸ“ @sb_boathouse highly recommend the fish tacos taken in Santa Barbara, California by @heighlenboyd

I promise you won’t have to watch me eating on Instagram anymore. Actually, I can’t promise that but I’ve been getting requests for more Oaxaca recommendations. I would say the most beautiful part of traveling anywhere is finding locals willing to share their favorite spots and if not, following your feet. I wasn’t sure I’d make it to this one last taco stand people kept raving about. It was my last day and I ran out to grab one last gift and on the way, I stumbled right onto it. It ended up being one of my favorite meals of the trip. It’s called Tacos del Carmen.

One more note: I ate corn tortillas for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and never once had stomach issues. Back home, corn is something I actively avoid. It was such a nice feeling not having to worry. taken in Oaxaca Mexico by @heighlenboyd

Highly recommend booking a train ticket on a whim and finding out what the day brings!!! LA to Santa Barbara is the perfect day trip. Park at Union Station. Take the first @amtrak up to maximize the day. Get off at Santa Barbara station. Lunch at @luckypennysb play at @moxisb then walk to the pier or hit the beach. Plenty to do without a car. Point is, you don’t need a crazy amount of planning or spending to have a lil adventure.

I love you so much, California. ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø taken in Los Angeles, California by @heighlenboyd

I was warned Oaxaca would be unsafe to travel solo. Instead, I was met with nothing but love and generosity, and I hope it showed. Meals were shared, doors were opened, and I was reminded of the hospitality I grew up with in the South. I’m officially home and have started edits for our next episode, which will be my token of gratitude. Can’t wait to share more! Te amo, Oaxaca. šŸ‡²šŸ‡½šŸ‡²šŸ‡½šŸ‡²šŸ‡½ā¤ļøā¤ļø

One thing I hope to build on with A Seat at the Table is sharing more experiences that go beyond food. This family in Teotitlán del Valle welcomed me into their home, cooked for me, shared their family history, and taught me everything I now know about weaving leaving me with memories I’ll carry for a lifetime.

I’m sharing this in hopes it opens up a different side of Oaxaca for you. One that has so much history and soul and depth to it. José and his beautiful family pour their hearts into this business, and it shows in every stitch of their work. In sharing this, I have faith that the right kind of traveler will find them. A traveler who understands the deep privilege of entering someone’s home and the beautiful gift of connection.

Their name is Casa de los Ángeles. Tell them I sent you and please bring that same love and care with you when you go. taken in Oaxaca, México by @heighlenboyd

This wasn’t part of the plan today but my friends in Teotitlán del Valle insisted I stop in Tule to see the tree. I said okay, why not. My driver pulled over and I walked up right as a funeral was ending, with a marching band leading the way out. I was busy watching and paying respects and then when I looked up and saw the actual size of it, I skipped a breath. The enormity of this tree is unbelievable. Come to find out it’s THE stoutest tree in the world. Locals call it the ā€œtree of lifeā€ and legend says it was planted by Pechocha, a revered Zapotec priest nearly 2,000 years ago.

Oaxaca continues to amaze me. by @heighlenboyd
