Prepping for a studio visit soon to show a bunch of my large paintings to a new gallerist! Unrolling and hanging lots of contenders and keeping a lot of options rolled up to unfurl and consider during the visit. Definitely an aerobic activity!! 🤪😊 very excited about the possibility of seeing my larger work, especially from my France residency @chateau_orquevaux displayed on some big white walls! #abstractpainting #abstractart #contemporaryart #originalart #abstractexpression #galleryart #studioview #artforinteriors #bayareaartist #mixedmediaart #mixedmediapainting #largescalepainting #helenscohen by @helenscohen
Artist @helenscohen Website: https://helenscohen.com/ Helen S. Cohen is a San Francisco–based abstract painter and mixed-media artist whose work grows out of an intuitive process of adding, subtracting, balancing, and listening. Moving between paint, collage, and gestural mark-making, she works with bold color, paper scraps, shapes, scribbles, and quirky marks, allowing each painting to evolve through discovery and improvisation. Her work often evokes a sense of place—imagined landscapes where inner and outer worlds meet. Shorelines, horizons, portals, bowls, and vessels recur throughout her paintings, suggesting nourishment, holding, transition, and the unknown. Cohen’s development as an artist has also been deeply shaped by her work as a documentary filmmaker and by raising a daughter with a developmental disability. Filmmaking expanded her understanding of visual storytelling, while motherhood immersed her in the complexities of nonverbal communication and nonlinear ways of perceiving the world. These experiences have heightened her sensitivity to gesture, color, mark-making, and the emotional possibilities of visual language. 💬 What feelings or thoughts does this artwork bring to you? Here’s a peek into the eclectic happenings inside the studio these days. I’ve always had multiple styles, interests and pulls to paint and create in radically different ways… with my large studio all to myself now I get to spread out and let the different personalities take shape side by side, in harmony and discord and everything in between. #originalart #abstractpainting #contemporaryart #artstudio #helenscohen by @helenscohen
Untitled Collaboration @carlheyward and @helenscohen in our developing series of works on canvas , paper and wooden panels mixed media 53 x 36 on canvas under consideration for the @globalartproject 2027 exhibition BY COLLABORATIVE MEANS at @ny2cagallery May - June by @helenscohen
Still working on this one, the first in what started as a triptych but all three have gone rogue and need to stand on their own now. Been adding lots more paint and going all Diebenkorn on it, layering, shifting and changing shapes and color, following some innate part of me that relates to this strange landscape. First photo is full piece on the studio wall, next is cropped to where it will be stretched, and last is first pass at where this started. #abstractpainting #abstractscapes #wip #studioview #helenscohen by @helenscohen
Just found this painting from 2020 when I unfurled a roll in storage looking for something else. It’s so different from what I’ve been working on lately and I found myself really taken in by its peace and balance. I titled it Prayer back then which still feels right. Pieces of collage with Japanese paper and ink, little scraps of my daughter’s messages and journal pages blend into the mysterious atmosphere. Acrylic, collage, ink, graphite on canvas. I need to get it stretched but it will measure around 52x50” #mixedmediapainting #quiet #abstractpainting #contemporaryart #helenscohen by @helenscohen
Still in progress on this one that started out as the third canvas in the triptych, morphed into a horizontal scape for a couple of passes and is now back up with the others starting a new conversation. 72x60” mixed media. We’ll see what happens next… #wip #studiovibes #abstractpainting #helenscohen by @helenscohen
Another one from my Beyond Measure series that got reinvented and gussied up through the collaborative painting process I’ve got going with @carlheyward - we seem to have a very good energy mash-up, bringing our different styles and sensibilities together to exciting ends. Or maybe new beginnings… 56x66” Collage/mixed media on canvas #collaborativeart #abstractpainting #collagepainting #mixedmediapainting #helenscohen by @helenscohen
Excited about this new one in the series of collaborative paintings I’m working on with my @globalartproject comrade @carlheyward. I started this painting many years ago as part of my Beyond Measure series using frags from my daughter’s old IEPs, testing and worksheets. It was kind of languishing, waiting for the right burst of energy and combo of paint and collage to bring it to life. Carl went to work on it and stuck the landing! Feels done and happy now. 56x66” Mixed media on canvas #mixedmediacollage #mixedmediapainting #abstractpainting #collaborativeart #helenscohen by @helenscohen
Spectacular installation by Jacob Hashimoto at @sfmoma in the huge gallery space on the lower level where it’s free to just wander in there and visit. Beyond words, amazing experience! If you are in the Bay Area you must go check it out for a total uplift. 🤩 #inspiration #beauty #uplifting #installationart by @helenscohen
