Race, training, and relaxation in the Julian Alps and the Alps. Three weeks of incredible experiences, including Helle’s Julian Alps UTMB ultra-trail race, free camping in the Trailhawk off-road camper in the heart of Europe’s largest bear habitat, nature wellness, summiting new peaks, swimming in new rivers and mountain lakes, and more. #iceswimmer #ultratraining #ultratrailrunning #openwaterswimming #cancerfighter by @helle_montem
DNF (Did Not Finish) - Julian Alps 120K 🏔️ 88 km / 4600m vertical climb - that’s where my race ended. Disappointed? No. I showed up and I gave it all. And it was tough and brutal - just what I came for 😅 The training towards a goal is never wasted no matter the outcome. Wild terrain: slippery roots, loose rocks, mud-skating downhill, climbing with ropes and 30-50% steep up and down. 100% focus, one wrong step and you slide off the mountain or fall. Night running was pure magic - silent, starry and a bit of rain but warm. ✨ Why I stopped. At 88 km I was cold, nauseous and mentally empty due to lack of energy -with another 16 km / 660m to go before I could get my my gels from Sean - I was mentally drained and pain started to be more contagious. Therefore I chose safety over pushing past cut off. Learnings: I have to get faster on 40-50% climbs, more confident jumping down on rocks - even with tired legs. 🪨 And a bigger backpack as I got so many burn marks 😅 I was the only woman in my age group 55-60 on the 120K. About 100 women out of 700 runners. More women should try this! I’ll be back 2027 ⛰️ Thank you so much for all support - this means a lot 🙏🏻❤️🫶🏻 Especially my favorite person - @sean_montem 🥰 Happy smiles Helle ❤️ #julianalps #ultratrail #trailrunning #dnf #trailwomen mountainrunning by @helle_montem
Helle has started the Julian Alps 120km Ultra Trail Running by UTMB. Many great—and extremely tough—hours lie ahead in the rugged mountains. I’ll be supporting Helle at most of the aid stations. A few exciting days ahead 🏔️🏃‍♀️💨💕 Supporter Sean Montem will provide an update later by @helle_montem
Race Day - ready or not here I come🏔️🏃‍♀️ Julian Alps by UTMB - 122 km 6000 M elevation. It’s always hard with the waiting and nerves creeping up on me 😀 but I can only do my best. I am in the Julian Alps in Slovenia and two years ago I did 80 km and now it’s time for the longest race here. You can follow me on the race - link in my bio. My favorite person❤️ @sean_montem will be my support at some points where it’s allowed and mental support🧠🥰 In my heart ❤️ I will carry my dear sister whom I lost two weeks ago ❤️‍🩹😢 Live is brutal at times but I will take one step at a time and keep moving forward. ❤️ Thank you so much for all the birthday wishes! I will reply to them all soon - they give me lots of energy for my next race this weekend (Friday-Sunday). 57 years young - time flies! I amhappy and grateful that my fitness watch says my fitness age is 34. I’d rather look 57 and be fit like a 34-year-old than look like a 34-year-old and be fit like a 57-year-old 😅 I celebrated my birthday in the Julian Alps surrounded by mountains, rivers and the best company - Sean and the dogs. My kind of therapy, no internet and of course, sunshine 😀☀️🏔️❤️ Thank you 🙏🏻 Hugs Helle ❤️ #birthdayinmountains #julianalps #trailrunning #grateful #mountaintherapy by @helle_montem
First trip with the Trailhawk off-road retro camper - which will complement the roof tent for our ultra training and race. 🏔️🏃‍♀️🏊‍♂️The trip was in our Swedish zone and the next race trip will be the Julian Alps. #ultratrailrunning #openwaterswimming by @helle_montem
LAVAREDO 120K BY UTMB - DNF 67KM / 3000M VERT. DONE. Everything can happen in a mountain ultra. That’s exactly why I love it — the unknown Cortina at midnight: electric. The whole town on its feet, shouting us up the first climb. I was tired before we even started. “Don’t let me sign up for midnight races again,” I told Sean. Km 10: Ankle rolled. Kept running so it wouldn’t seize. Km 12: Rolled again. Stopped. Hurt. ‘So this is how it ends?’ No. One aid station at a time. Pain sat at 4/10. I could move, just not bomb the downs. Hit each cutoff with time to spare. Make it to sunrise. That was the new goal. The night was my favorite part. A quiet chain of runners, alone together. Just the tap of poles and crunch of shoes. Then the sun came. The mountain woke up. I was too focused on technical terrain to grab photos, but I felt it. 42km became 67km. National park views, then crowds, then heat. The final 17km descent broke me — 1000m downhill of loose rocks which my ankle couldn’t handle. Pain was high and Sun beating down. Water gone too But drank water from the River… Slow march. Found Sean at 67km. My best Supporter❤️Decision made. My foot needs rest. The rest of me? Already hungry for what’s next 💪🏻🫶🏻❤️ Grateful for every message, every cheer. You carried me farther than my legs could. hugs and smiles Helle ‘Life begins at the end of the comfort zone’ #UTMB #Lavaredo120K #UltraTrail #DNF #mindsetmatters by @helle_montem
Helle started at 11:00 PM on the 120 km La Sportiva Lavaredo Ultra Trail of UTMB in the center of Cortina d’Ampezzo - a hard night, day and one more night awaits in the technically difficult and wild Dolomites. Sean will follow and support Helle and update the highlights (in places where it is physically possible) #LavaredoUltraTrail #UTMBWorldSeries #UltraTrail #TrailRunning #Ultrarunning by @helle_montem
The countdown is on ⏳ Lavaredo by UTMB. Dolomites. Friday at 23:00 hrs 120km. 6000m elevation. And Europe’s in a heatwave. So naturally I’m thinking: ‘WTF have I signed up for’? But honestly? I’m here for it. For the high mountains. For that feeling of being way out of my comfort zone. I’ll learn a ton no matter what happens. If you Want to follow the chaos? UTMB.live.world → Link in bio I spend last weeks recharging in Walchsee, Austria with Sean + the dogs. That’s our happy place: trails, lakes, mountains, repeat. I am going dark for race week but Sean will post updates. You can’t pause a sunset/ sunrise But you can miss it. The door still feels heavy sometimes - even for me… Even after years of training/ running 🏃‍♀️ Nobody claps for you when you lace up in the dark. Nobody cares if your legs are dead or your head is loud. But this? This sunset didn’t happen in my living room. This silence isn’t on the couch. This “in the moment” is something Day by days - months of showing up for THIS second. Where the light hits, the brain shuts up, and you remember why you started. Motivation is okay but Discipline is a must… Enjoy your week. Happy smiles Helle #inthemoment #earnednotgiven #monthsinthesmaking #disciplineequalsfreedom #sunsetrun ultratrailrunner by @helle_montem
CRAFT ULTRA 60 km Yesterday I ran Craft Ultra 60 km at Österlen a beautiful place in Sweden. 🇸🇪 I had great support from Sean ❤️and it was a great training day to get some km in the legs and get out of my comfort zone. So I chased cut off times, tested energy and equipment, heat training, salt etc… Lots of running on asphalt, large gravel roads, sandy beach, monotonous slow running better than walking. And my legs hurt, but continued... Several mental ups and down. 🔝⬇️ At 4:00 PM I was mentally down, I called Sean to pick me up because I wouldn’t make the next cut off at 4:15 PM, which was around 42… my watch showed 45 – but I hadn’t seen any cut off zone and I didn’t trust my watch – “I won’t make the cut off at 42 so I have to be picked up and I only see hills and nature as far as the eye can see, so I won’t make it.” At 4:15 PM I talked to a guy that now we’re out because we won’t make the cut off and there were a lot of runners there… “We passed that cut off a long time ago – now we’re on our way to the next one.”😁 Okay – then I kept running to the finish Line. 🚀 At the end of the race I overtook many who walked and that is always mentally a bonus. It was beautiful day and different landscape and for sure a race I can recommend if you want to run an Ultra. Now my legs need to rest for a few days, then I’m looking forward to more mountain training towards the next goal….. Happy smiles Helle 🫶🏻 Thank you @sean_montem for cheering, mental support and looking after the wolf dogs + photos❤️ #ultralöpning #trainingday #ultrarace #keepgoingforward by @helle_montem
🌿 In these stressful and uncertain times, our mind and body’s stress levels are activated more than we realize – especially when many things are out of our control, like during the Pandemic. Sometimes we need a little extra support, and that’s why I want to share a way to calm your mind. One of my favorite ways is of course exercising outdoors in nature, but I have also started using the app “THE WAY” every day this month. It’s a meditation app, and just 10 minutes a day makes such a huge difference. The best part is you can do it anywhere – maybe sitting in your car right before work or on the train – and afterwards, you’ll feel ready for the day ahead. “The Way” is a journey, and you are guided along the way. As a special bonus, the app is free this month thanks to Dr. Rangan from the podcast “Feel Better Live More” @drchatterjee Give it a try and feel it… You already know all the advantages with meditation but to feel them is different💚 Let me know how it goes 💫 Hugs and smiles, Helle 💚🫶🏻 PS In our house we also enjoy a few moments to sit with our cats as they are very calming and especially when purring. #Meditation #cancerliv #StressRelief #TheWayApp #MentalHealth by @helle_montem
