This week our education team partnered with the @hellenic_museum for a day of professional learning for Humanities teachers. From handling ancient artefacts to exploring parliamentary processes, teachers experienced an interactive journey through ancient and modern democracy. Participants described the day as "fantastic" and "an amazing experience".

Today is the feast day of Saint Francis of Assisi, and yesterday marked the 800th anniversary of his death in 1226 🪽
While Saint Francis is not canonised in the Orthodox Church and is a Catholic saint, his image frequently appeared in Cretan Orthodox contexts - influenced by Venetian patrons and artists.

✨Did you know? ✨
Saint Francis is the patron saint of animals and ecology in Catholic tradition, and was known to refer to animals as "brothers" and "sisters"; fellow creations of God.

In Orthodox Christianity, feast days are specific calendar days dedicated to remembering and venerating patron saints or holy events – and in the Greek Orthodox calendar, today (17 September) is the feast day of Saint Sophia, who can be seen here in our 'Divine Thresholds' exhibition. 💫🪽

Did you know?
✨ Sophia means 'wisdom' in ancient Greek
✨ Saint Sophia had three daughters named after the three Christian values: Faith (Pistis), Hope (Elpis) and Love (Agapi)
✨ She was forced to witness the martyrdom of her three beloved daughters, and mourned at their grave for three days before dying there. She is honoured as a martyr herself because of the suffering she endured.

For Orthodox Christians who share their name with a saint, feast days are also their 'name day' – so Χρόνια Πολλά (many years) and Να χαίρεσαι το όνομά σου (may you enjoy your name) to any Sophias out there.
