Theophania, or Epiphany, is a significant holiday and celebration in Greece that marks the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River by John the Baptist. The word ‘Epiphany’ comes from the Greek word ‘Theophania,’ which means the manifestation of God to the world. This holiday is typically celebrated on January 6th and is considered one of the most important religious observances in the Greek Orthodox calendar.

On this day, many Greeks participate in various traditions and rituals to commemorate the event. One of the most popular customs is the Blessing of the Waters ceremony, where a cross is thrown into the sea or a body of water, and young men dive in to retrieve it. This symbolizes the baptism of Jesus and is believed to bring good luck and health to the person who finds the cross.

In addition to the Blessing of the Waters ceremony, families gather together to enjoy a festive meal and exchange gifts. Traditional foods such as Vasilopita (a sweet bread with a hidden coin inside) and Avgolemono soup are commonly served during Epiphany celebrations. Many people also attend church services and participate in parades and processions to honor the holiday.
