What a fantastic afternoon at Westminster for the @mapleprojectuk reception.

Following the launch of the Maple Review in June, it was brilliant to hear how things have moved on since then and what the next phase looks like.

@emily4mk opened the session, and it was great to hear from Kate Hayward from Xero and Michelle Ovens CBE again on the progress since June and what they’re focusing on now.

It was also really great chatting with Anna Matthews about the support the project needs and how the small business community can help drive it forward.

This work matters because there are so many passionate, capable, hardworking people with the potential to build brilliant businesses, but not everyone has equal access to the skills, finance, encouragement and support they need to get started.

It was also lovely to see Natalie Heywood again and to meet some fab new people including @juliewong.fd , @alison.leach_ , Louise Liddle and Louise Duncum of @weizstyles by @hellobusinesssupport

I’ve been so incredibly nervous about sending this month’s newsletter that I’ve been putting it off all week 🫣 And STILL, here I am, 5pm on a Friday evening, still hovering over the send button.

Part of me wants to send it and quietly hope nobody reads it.

The other part of me is listening to my team, who have told me it’s something I should share and I know they are right…🤫

So, this one is a personal note from me about something I experienced a few years ago and don’t speak about that openly. It is something that changed the way I think about stress and burnout, and in the end the way we support the people behind the businesses we work with (including our own!)

There’s always one job on the list that keeps getting moved to tomorrow.

And then tomorrow.

And possibly the day after that.

“Eat the frog” means tackling that important task first, before the emails, admin and other distractions have a chance to take over.

First, check that it genuinely needs doing and that it needs to be done by you.

Customer feedback can tell you far more than whether someone is willing to give you a lovely testimonial.

The questions people keep asking, comments that come up in conversations and patterns you notice in reviews can all tell you something.

And you don’t need a lengthy survey to find out more.

Ask what made someone choose you. Find out whether anything nearly stopped them. Pay attention to what they value about working with you.

The thing you think matters most might not be the thing your customers value most.

When did you last properly listen to what your customers are telling you?

A little question for today...

When did you last speak to someone in your network without needing anything from them?

Good relationships aren’t only built at networking events.

They’re built in the conversations afterwards.

The check-ins.

The coffees.

The introductions.

The moments when someone thinks, “I know exactly who could help with that.”

Your network doesn’t always need to get bigger.

Sometimes it just needs a little more attention. 💛

When everything feels busy, it can be hard to work out what actually needs your attention.

Try choosing one area of your business and look at three things:

What’s taking the most time?

What’s taking the most energy?

Where is money being spent?

Then compare that with what’s giving you the most back.

You don’t need to fix everything at once. Start with the change that could create the most space.
