@angelxaudrey put together such a memorable birthday event.Showcasing local artists, live performances, poems, and interactive art. She has the most beautiful way of bringing together and empowering the community. Perfect way to end the Gemini season. With this being my first instillation, I thought I’d introduce myself as an artist and a bit about the collection, “Nothing to confess”I’m a Seattle transplant, and recovering Texan. Much of my work centers on the female nude form—a subject I’ve been drawn to for as long as I can remember. Turns out, spending years obsessively making art about women may have been one of my earliest clues that I was queer. This collection is about my journey from shame to self-possession.Growing up in a conservative religious environment, I was taught that my body was something to be hidden, and controlled. When first discovering my body, I felt the conflicting emotions of both pleasure and shame. Painting the nude feminine form became a way to reconnect with my body on my own terms and reclaim what had once felt forbidden. These works celebrate nudity without shame, desire without guilt, and beauty without permission. Our bodies being sexualized is just another example of our patriarchal society shaming FAAB individuals.On a lighter note: This show was extra special to me, because it was the first time my sister got to see me walk.
