One of the lovely things about being back in the Bay of Plenty is photographing for the folks at @ourplacemagazine again. I’m always amazed by the talented, kind people they find to highlight in the region, and Stu McDonald and his team from @theahipoutucollective were no exception. Giving time and space for kids with the aim to “reindigenise living, learning and healing spaces through toi Māori” is love in action, and I’m looking forward to sharing more from this story… by @hellopoe

I share pretty much only my photography here, but the truth is I have two careers that I absolutely love - photography and design - especially design for print 📚❤️. One of the really fun projects I worked on last year is out in the wild now and I wanted to make sure I shout about it!

It was a real joy to design this coffee table book on the Mediterranean for @lonelyplanet . I got my start in travel photography shooting for LP many years ago and it’s so lovely to be back with them, this time on the design side!

A real pleasure to work with such a talented team on this one - @emdubin @robinabarton @petervg73 and @claire_pictured_this with illustrations by the incredible @anna.tzortzi 🙌🏼 Thank you all!

Visual representation of me when deadline is over and the borders open 💃🏼

(In actual fact an outtake from the Canary Islands, shot with a fantastic crew on a beautiful shoot for @pandocruises - but the analogy still stands 🐬) taken in Gran Canaria, Spain by @hellopoe

I was watching the Nat Geo ‘Best of the World’ show the other day and got all nostalgic with the episode on Mexico City, which is one of my favourite places on earth. Everything about CDMX sings to my soul. The people, the language, the energy, the landscapes, the food.

In that episode they visit Isla de las Muñecas, accessed by gliding down the canal ways of Xochimilco, which reminded me of this favourite image I made there. I can’t wait to return one day. México will always have a piece of my heart ❤️ by @hellopoe

I had no idea how difficult concussions can be until I got one a few months ago. I had no idea how much it can affect everything in your life, and how it can feel like most things are suddenly overwhelmingly difficult, even the things that have always been easy.

It’s been an exercise in patience and having to slow way, way, wayyyy down whilst trying to have faith that I will get back to feeling like me again. Some days are really good, some days are still incredibly difficult. Turns out, the only way is through.

I took a slow walk in the Gardens yesterday, saw some colourful flowers in the depths of winter that made me smile, and grabbed this fairly accurate depiction of what the inside of my head looks like. I’m so ready for things to get sharper but for now, finding the beauty in the little things 💐 by @hellopoe

An orangutan, eating a leek.

I remember watching this old guy and smiling at his slow, quiet joy. The day after I took this photo, the city went into lockdown for four (five?) months. I thought of him often during that time, and hoped he was still getting his favourite snacks by @hellopoe

The legendary TranzAlpine train making its way through the mountains and valleys near Arthur’s Pass. It’s one of my favourite journeys to make in Aotearoa, so it was lovely to jump on and off during this shoot for @natgeotraveluk - being surrounded by glittering snow-covered mountains just does good things for the soul 😌 by @hellopoe

When I’m photographing, I spend a good amount of time keeping an eye on things. Moments. Colours. Light. Shapes. The way people interact in spaces.

On this particular shoot with @theahipoutucollective I was struck by all the blue - from the kids uniforms to the cerulean skies to the artwork being created - it was everywhere.

Wandering over to Picasso Amouta (@_cas_36 ) I not only got a masterclass in how the angling of spray paint cans and the various nozzles can produce an array of textures and shapes, I also got a shot that I had seen unfolding from across the way - layers of blue, with that typically hard New Zealand light emphasising the graphic lines, shapes and colours that the group themselves were creating - and Cas himself standing with the tools of the day as he patiently explained his process.

It was so great seeing the kids fired up about art and creating something beautiful for their school. And how cool that places like @theahipoutucollective exist, giving tamariki the space to connect with their heritage, and create 💙
