First full matching outfit done. ✔️ Just in time to live in it through the rest of summer and early fall. 🌞 Both top and pants were mostly easy and fast to sew since I’d already cut the fabric pieces out more than a month ago.

This #HurryHomexRue coat is finished—at last. It has been, by far, the most challenging sewing project I’ve taken on, spanning several months since early November. It combined piecing, quilting, and garment-making all in one, and I never would’ve considered attempting it without the motivation and encouragement from those I met here through the sew-along. I’m so excited to finally wear it—and honestly relieved to move on to my next project. This one truly upped my skills and gave me the confidence to start tackling more ambitious patterns. 🧵✨

Big thank you to @spaghetti_western_sewing, @sarahb_sews, and @stitchbitch for this wonderful pattern, the weekly newsletters that kept us all going and for putting together such a supportive community sew-along.

Russ and I haven’t been back to SF together since moving away in 2019. It was fun to play tourist for a day and a half in the city.

We stopped at places we frequented a lot when living there like Millbrae to see the Wus, San Mateo Pancho Villa, Crissy Field… and crammed in a few touristy things like seeing Fort Pointe, walking in Muir Woods, riding a cable car, and going to the Museum of San Francisco. We also got dim sum at Yank Sing, shopped at Britex Fabrics, City Lights bookstore, and the Ferry Building.

Bay Bridge view

Lots of fond memories at Crissy Field

And the Warming Hut

Fort Pointe was a new one for us and I can’t believe we never went while living in the Bay Area.

The annual Rolex Big Boat Series sailing competition was going on while we were there so there was a lot of activity in the bay.

Fort Pointe brick fortress

Happy to be amongst the trees again. After seeing the sequoias in Mariposa Grove, I really wanted to see the redwoods in Muir Woods.

Took a few rides on the Van Ness/Market cable car for the very first time.

Chinatown

I found my favorite building facade for the day in Chinatown.

And Russ literally found his building.

California Tunnel Tree in Mariposa Grove, Yosemite

Yosemite Valley, El Capitan

El Capitan

Stellar Jay

Cook’s Meadow

Cook’s Meadow

Mirror Lake was bone dry but the view was still fantastic. The one downside to going so late in the season is that most of the falls are trickling, if not dry. Same goes for lakes that are usually full from the snow runoff.

Watching the El Cap climbers from the meadow. We craned our necks and couldn’t look away, mesmerized by the sheer rock face, their stamina and incredible strength, and the guts it takes when the summit is still days away.

Tunnel View

Glacier Point

Bridalveil Falls is more like a misty sprinkler by this time of year, but still beautiful in its own way. We will definitely have to be back at peak water levels in the spring.

Bridalveil Falls misty conditions made for this really pretty rainbow.

We arrived a tad too early in the morning to see the Yosemite Museum in the valley but did get to see this cross-section of a giant sequoia before we headed off to see the ones in Mariposa Grove.

Got to see this big coyote roaming parallel to the road.

And immediately after saw these young bucks going by.

Grizzly Giant in Mariposa Grove. One of its branches are larger than most trees in the area!

Russ and I went on a week-long road trip to Yosemite a couple weeks ago. It was a much needed break from work— and social media. We spent one night in Bishop, two nights in June Lake, three nights in Yosemite and two nights in SF. Each stop gave us the opportunity to check out the attractions and sights nearby, which made it seem like mini trips in between. We’re already looking forward to heading back out there.

Bishop Creek

Heading back down from Sabrina Lake

We stopped at Schat’s Bakery in Bishop. They had good pull apart cinnamon bread, but the one worth mentioning was Copper Top BBQ in Big Pine, which we hit on the way into town.

The next day as we headed out towards June Lake, we stopped at Laws Railroad Museum, which turned out better than expected. The docents and staff were so knowledgeable and fun to talk to. We really enjoyed learning more about this historic railroad stop.

Convict Lake in Mono County

We did an impromptu hike around a third of Convict Lake. It was a tad warmer than expected, but the wind was picking up, which made it feel much nicer.

Hot Springs Geologic Site, Mammoth Lakes. The majority of the moving water was spa temperature, the two scalding pools are the really pretty blue ones in the back.

Hot Springs Geologic Site, Mammoth Lakes. Water in the hot springs was super warm along with high 80’s weather. 🥵

We had planned a day of reading by the water once we got to June Lake, but it was a bit chillier than expected and way too windy. So we started the day with a delicious breakfast at the very popular Silver Lake Resort (the wait was an hour, but worth it) and then headed out to explore around Mammoth.

Tioga Lake, Lee Vining

Bodie Ghost Town was one of my favorites of the trip. It’s known as one of the best preserved ghost towns in the US, and it’s kept in a state of “arrested decay,” so nothing is restored, just stabilized. Apparently only 5% of the original town is left. We went past Mono Lake to check it out. Really wish we had a tour guide and more time for this one.

Remnants of Bodie- hauntingly beautiful and peaceful.

Nothing finished to show today, just the slow, invisible parts: fabric prep (selecting, washing, ironing), printing patterns, cutting paper, transferring markings. Not the finished, Instagram ready kind of post, but it’s all part of sewing, and it’s the same gradual pace ceramics has taught me too with all of its steps. I fit this time in when I can, usually in small pockets between work and everything else. I used to rush through these parts, but I’ve grown to appreciate all of it and the slowdown itself. So with that, lots of not so perfect but very real captures of slow progress, and also the cutest dang mini poodle. taken in Dana Point, California by @hellotinanealis

Picked up this light, airy linen at @moodfabrics in the LA garment district earlier this year and finally turned it into two @summerhaus_ #shpoppytop tops — one for me and a matching one for my galpal @liztaylorcreative 👯‍♀️ Such an easy sew and an even easier top to wear on repeat. Perfect for these warm summer days! ☀️

Had all these pieces cut and waiting for months, finally sewed them all up in one week. 🧵 Breaking the process into phases (printing/cutting, transferring to fabric, cutting, then sewing) makes SUCH a difference. Everything’s ready to go when I sit down, and it makes it so much more enjoyable.
This batch included two pairs of play pants and three dresses for my two nieces, all made with @florachild.co patterns. These itty bitty pieces are so fun to watch come together.
I like that the #irisdress pattern can convert to a shirt as the kids grow into it, so it keeps up with them longer. The striped #sagepants turned out so good I was tempted to make myself a pair.

This week was an emotional roller coaster, no exaggeration. New puppy, Sonny’s tonsillectomy and rough recovery, some other family stuff thrown in— we are exhausted. 🫠 As we close out the week, everyone’s finally on the up and up. We can see the light at the end of the tonsil-recovery tunnel and we are SO relieved. Celebrating making it to Friday. Resetting this weekend with some downtime, sewing, and naps. 🧵😴

Photo dump from the past week:
1. Lady had her first grooming appt today w/ @jessicapoodlegroomer and she did so well!
2. Sonny finally felt well enough to go to studio yesterday to throw on the wheel and pick up his latest creation from the kiln; even came home with fresh roses for me. 🥰
3. Puppy shenanigans
4. Sonny’s creation from this past week while he was housebound post-surgery. He worked on his Gundam during the moments when the pain meds were working well enough. It was a great project to keep his mind off things.
5. One of the three @florachild.co dresses (#irisdress) I’m slowly constructing for my nieces. 👧🏼👧🏼
6. Puppy naps
7. Taking Lady to the beach for the first time
8. Post op- We have had our fair share of time at the hospital in the past so this is a familiar place for our family. The entire staff was amazing, but it is always such a trigger to be back in these spaces, even when the outcome is good.
9. The mess that is my craft closet. I did accomplish converting it from mostly painting supplies to sewing and happily shared the majority of my paints to an artist friend who will put them to good use. 🎨 by @hellotinanealis

Made these @matchymatchysewingclub #kitepantspattern a few weeks ago but never got around to styling them for photos. Finally ironed my outfit today, so figured it was time to capture them in all their glory.

Honestly, I was iffy once I finished — I sewed the pattern as-is with no alterations in a size Medium, following the pattern’s stated measurements, but quickly realized Small would’ve fit better. I ended up taking almost 5” off the bottom, which cut off the taper and lost the barrel leg profile. And since that length came off the hem instead of the center of the leg, the crotch ended up baggy too. Oh while we’re at it, the back pockets are uneven, but that’s the sewist’s fault. 😅

I’ve already made the fix on my paper pattern and can’t wait to try it again! It was such an easy sew, and after a few washes I’ve actually been wearing these more than I expected — bolder pattern, baggy butt and all. 😁

We’ve literally got a few things in the fire recently at the ceramics studio. Sonny and I have been glazing and waiting for them to come out of the kiln. Will share photos once I’ve got a moment… and once they survive the fire.🤞
In addition to that, our hands have been a bit full with a recent addition of a puppy to the family— meet Lady! 🖤 She’s been taking up most of our time. 🐩
Hoping to get back into the rhythm of things and fit more studio and sewing time back into the mix soon. taken in Dana Point, California by @hellotinanealis
