Grand Staircase-Escalante turned 30 last week. Hell’s Backbone Grill is on its 27th season. That is no accident. Video made possible by @Patagonia

@blake_spalding and I have been sliding into each other’s DMs for years. On this trip we finally met in person. It turns out we are the exact same height, and we get fired up about the exact same things. 😂

Blake and her business partner Jen opened Hell’s Backbone in Boulder, Utah, in 2000. Boulder is a town of about 250 people at the end of a very long road. Today the restaurant is one of the biggest employers in the county. People drive for hours to eat her food, and then they go explore the canyons out the back door. The monument brings them in. The restaurant feeds them. The whole town gets to keep the lights on.

That is good economics. Protected land is like a well that keeps giving water as long as you take care of it. A mine drinks the whole well in one gulp. You get one big payday, and the next generation gets a dry hole.

When the administration cut Grand Staircase this summer, it said the monument was too big for the BLM’s staff and budget to manage. That is like cutting a restaurant’s kitchen crew in half and then saying the menu is too big. The fix is not a smaller menu. The fix is hiring more cooks.

Grand Staircase does not need less protection. It needs more rangers, more scientists, and more funding to care for it. Utahns agree. Seven in ten Utah voters oppose cuts to public lands agencies, and two out of three want these monuments restored.

Natives have always been at the forefront of the fight to protect the environment. They know better than all of us the importance of being a good steward, human, and neighbor. Our public lands are not for sale, especially by those who have never stepped foot on it. The 90% reduction of #escalantenationalmonument and #bearsearsnationalmonument is stealing from all of us - hunters, hikers, fisherman, motorcyclists, and everyone in between who values recreation, freedom, and what it provides.

I was raised to learn about all viewpoints before I make a decision. I’d like to see our government do the same. Public lands are one of the few issues that both sides want to protect. If you truly want to unify a country, this is an easy place to start .

“ If we don’t respect the land, we can’t expect for the rest of us to thrive and be healthy,” - Dr. Angelo Baca, member of the Navajo (Diné) and Hopi Nations & Conservation Lands Foundation board member.

Angelo’s message is something we should all pay attention to: that we must protect the land together and tend to it with intention and love.

Bears Ears National Monument (as well as Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument) has been at the forefront of public lands news due to the Trump administration removing over a combined 3 million acres of protections for the monuments. Bears Ears National Monument is the ancestral homelands of Native Nations — it’s a culturally significant and an immensely important place to protect. And, as Angelo beautifully stated, this place is his home.

Immediately after this national monument was drastically reduced in size, 7 mining claims were filed for Bears Ears while 2 were filed for Grand Staircase - showcasing how this administration will cut corners and violate guardrails to accelerate the destruction of sacred places.

Now, the Conservation Lands Foundation is taking legal action to challenge President Trump’s assault on Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments.

We are grateful to have Angelo on our Board to help with guidance, expertise and genuine care in our mission to protect them!
