Thank you to Hell’s Backbone for such a special visit! 💫
On our recent road trip, Brady and I were fortunate to visit this incredible restaurant run by Blake Spaulding and Jen Castle in rural Boulder, Utah near Grand Staircase-Escalante Natl. Monument.
This is season 27 serving delicious regional dishes, made with produce grown on their local farm!
🌶️
Hell’s Backbone is a beacon of hope, a daily practice in devotion to a better world. I felt so inspired to be here and witness everything they have created, despite all odds. It’s not easy to run a biz in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by people who may not share your values, but as we’ve learned with DRAM, it can be a recipe for success.
Every dish was perfection at dinner, and we came back for breakfast at the Little Bone food truck, where we are honored to have DRAM drinks for sale!
Thank you for the reminder to keep fighting the good fight, and the beauty that is created along the way.

SAVE GRAND STAIRCASE: A love letter to a place that MATTERS.

Last week, Utah Representative Celeste Maloy and Senator Lee introduced joint resolutions to gut the management plan for Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah, which guides everything from the protection of sacred landscapes to the location of new campgrounds.

Overturning the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument plan overrides years of public input and collaboration, puts the monument in harm’s way, AND sets a dangerous precedent for Congress to unravel monument management plans across the country. If Congress can invalidate Grand Staircase-Escalante's monument management plan through use of a top-down veto, no national monument is safe.

📣 Take action today by clicking the link in our bio or visiting conservationlands.org to use our action tool to urge your members of Congress to vote NO on this shortsighted resolution. Now that we have joint resolutions introduced in both the House and the Senate, this is a NEW action tool. So if you've already taken previous action, we urge you to use this new tool since it sends emails to BOTH your Representatives and Senators and includes requests to vote no on specific joint resolutions.

In order of appearance:
David Feinman, Vice President of Government Affairs, Conservation Lands Foundation.
Nathan Waggoner, Escalante Outfitters - Escalante, UT
Mel Raider, Willow Canyon Outdoor - Kanab, UT
Brandie Hardman, Boulder Mountain Guest Ranch - Boulder, UT
Dr. Jacqueline (Jackie) Grant, Executive Director of Grand Staircase-Escalante Partners - Kanab & Escalante, UT
Blake Spalding, Hell's Backbone Grill & Farm - Boulder, UT

🚨 Congress could soon vote on a proposal that would eliminate the management plan protecting Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument.

Here’s what that means — and why it matters. We’ve defeated Mike Lee before, and we WILL do it again. I get it, we’re tired and I promise to never sound the alarm unless it’s necessary.

📣 CALL TO ACTION AT THE END OF THE CAPTION AND IN SLIDES 14–15 — I included scripts you can use to call or email your representatives. I wrote them so you don’t even have to think about it.

Utah Senator Mike Lee and Representative Celeste Maloy recently introduced a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution targeting the monument’s current management plan. If you’ve never heard of a monument management plan, it’s essentially the rulebook for how the land is protected and used — including fossil protection, wildlife habitat, cultural site preservation, recreation access, grazing, and off-road vehicle routes.

The current plan was finalized after years of scientific review, public comment, and consultation with Tribal Nations connected to this landscape. Instead of changing the monument itself, this resolution aims to eliminate the plan guiding how the monument is managed.

➡️ Under the Congressional Review Act, if Congress overturns a rule:
• the rule disappears entirely
• agencies cannot create another rule that is “substantially the same.”
🛑 That means the monument’s management plan — developed over years of consultation and compromise — cannot simply be recreated.

Congress has roughly 60 legislative days to act on a CRA resolution. We don’t know exactly when it will happen — and this isn’t just a Utah issue.

‼️ Members of Congress from every state will vote on this.‼️

Public lands belong to all of us, and if you’ve ever been to the Grand Staircase, you know exactly how special this place is.
