POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Practice in Motion happened last weekend, what a feat!
Over 2 days 20+ artists contributed their work, care, humour and invention; everyone mucked in with making it happen; there were some brilliant conversations, challenging provocations and awe-inspiring thinking.
THANKS to my co-organisers @gretagauhe and @_teddyhunter - this took some courage and conviction!
A massive thank you to our keynote artists @florence_peake , @evestainton , @atdeb_atart, Deborah Di Meglio and @tarafteh, Tara Fatehi for being such brilliant artists and sharing their practices and thinking with us.
And to all the brilliant contibuting artists listed below, and to @beth.greenhalgh.11 for production support.
Thanks @oldprintworksbrum for the space and to the lovely adjacent cafe @changekitchen.
Thanks to @midlands4cities for funding this to make it possible.

And thanks to those who attended - artists, locals and curious folk bringing their witnessing, questioning and ideas to the table.

We experienced a great sense of flow and interconnection between performances, presentations, installations and conversations. Questions surfaced about institutional contexts, how we make use of them and what is at stake; exercising solidarity in decolonising practises within the academy; productivity and desire; archives and rock time; AI algorithms within creativity, witnessing as with-nessing and much more... We hope everyone took something away from the experience.

Thank you to all participating artists:

In 2023 I made a wallpaper collage for Tavistock Institute's office. It's made out of re-printed bits from their archive along with my cut-out shapes, phrases and body-part photos. The office is soon moving buildings and on the hottest monday in May I had a divine time with a small gang of artists doing creative graffitti on the collage before I pulled the whole thing off the wall.
It felt like a listening score, watching each other insert marks, words, colours hand and footprints. I wish I had done this sooner - the collective endeavour is so much more evocative of the dynamic and wild force that I had envisioned. We could have gone on for ages.....
thanks so much to Rachel @lopezdelanieta Annja Neumann, and Kate @k.ate.rya.n for coming along to play

and thanks to @tihr_arts for giving me creative space in my PhD project to do immersive weird things that don't need to make sense.

The piece is based on archives from studies on work relations in industry. The fragments chosen for this wall – paper collage come from a selection of sources that date from the 1950s to 1970s in projects related to socio technical systems studies. The piece orients around the repeated refrain about workers who ’don’t even have the scope for deciding where to place their hands and feet’, words from a letter written in 1974 by Lisl Klein to Sir Michael Foot M.P where she is trying to persuade him to invest political support to the Quality of Working Life Project. A core selection comes from Automation Project, 1959-61 a study of a sulphur recovery plant in Manchester. Other snippets are included from related socio technical systems studies in coalmines in the 1950s, and Isabel Menzies Lyth's renowned Kings College Hospital project 1956/7 about Institutions being social defences against anxiety in the nursing system.

All part of my creative practice as research PhD with @cdare_cu and Tavistock Institute's archive. close up of a fragmented paper cut-out collage with drawings taken in The Tavistock Institute of Human Relations by @heni_hale

After four years of research, making, collecting, filming, recording and reflecting, my PhD exhibition At a Touching Distance is finally here. It feels surreal to be sharing the work and practice that has shaped so much of my life over the past four years.

I’m very excited to open this up and share it with everyone, the installations, film, audio recordings, field notes, traces and encounters that have developed through this journey.

I’m also incredibly excited that @heni_hale will be joining me in the evening session from 6:30pm onwards to share aspects of her practice through a live contribution, which will then open into a dialogue together.

The daytime exhibition (11am–3pm) is open access, so please feel free to drop in anytime.
For the evening programme (6:30pm–9pm), booking is required (via link or QR code). I’d love to see you there.

The exhibition includes works by my collaborators @atdeb_atart , @hannahhh_adamsss , @flavien.cornilleau , @johannamerceron & @marta_stepien_ and photography taken during previous events by @dominicfarlam. It also includes works by research participants. I am forever grateful for their contributions.

It also includes a film created together with @jocorkdancedigi and @atdeb_atart.

Special thanks go to @atdeb_atart for her ongoing contributions without whom non of this would have been possible.

Thank you also to my supervisors @rosasencisfilms and @meehanemma for their endless support and encouragement.

Heni Hale is sharing some of recent embodied work with archives and consent, in a presentation/ screening in the law library, as part of the ARHC Dance and Law Festival of Practice
It is running twice near the end of both ‘library tours’ (11-1.00 and 3-6.00) – don’t miss it. Book via link in bio.

Title: Consent in Suspension

This is an experimental set-up that addresses consent or lack of consent when working with archive materials and historical documents. Via a presentation and video assemblage, Heni will share her ethical dilemmas when eavesdropping on a past community or culture that stirs difficult responses to perceived power relations. The archive video footage is of a social science simulation experiment that researchers from Tavistock Institute of Human Relations carried out in 1976 with a merchant navy shipping company called Jebsens, as an exercise in industrial democracy. Through the examination of the various layers of gaze both in the archive footage and in the present, the aim is to invite us all to recognise how consent is entangled with our acts of witnessing. The footage is quite deteriorated and poor sound quality will be supported by captioning.

Eavesdropping on the archives with @heni_hale @37looestreet

This penultimate Optimizer! Evening brought rich questions and Heni’s work on archives, consent, what embodied research can really do, worker relations and repetition. All through the lens of an embodied, creative engagement with archival footage of a simulation experiment conducted with Jebsen’s merchant navy shipping company in 1977.

Metabolizer is open Friday 6th March and Saturday 7 March and for our closing Wednesday March 11 with our LAST evening encounter featuring the fantastic @bryonygillard and essay performance Upstream (book a free place with the link in bio) taken in Looe Street by @heni_hale

Industrial Democracy in Suspension: video performance lecture

🪩Wed 4 March
💥from 6pm gather / bar/ Metabolize
➰7pm performance
🥂Followed by discussion / dancing / hanging out

Through video assemblage and performance practices, artist-researcher Heni Hale shares her encounters with a set of unedited video records of a ‘simulation’ experiment, conducted in 1977 with a merchant navy shipping company Jebsens. The experiment programme, devised with Tavistock Institute of Human Relations action researchers, simulated a ships environment and proposed hypothetical problems to be solved by the group, aiming to develop new decentralised, democratised work systems, to improve conditions, and work relations in the contained environment of industrial sea life. Mobilising a visceral and felt- sense responsivity, Heni tussles with affective impacts of witnessing and touching these suspended fragments of a world seemingly halted in time and heavily defined by a gendered class system. At the same time, she explores the thorny ethics of re-use and mis-use (a term coined by Jaimie Baron, 2021) of archival images, and lack of consent from original participants.

Heni Hale is a movement and performance artist whose practice navigates the space between bodies, histories, and technologies. Through her collective Dog Kennel Hill
Project and current post graduate research at the Centre for Dance Research, Coventry University, she explores how movement can activate archives and reimagine past encounters with automation and industrial systems. Drawing on the
Tavistock Institute’s 20th-century studies, her work embodies and re-enacts historical moments to explore how technological change continues to shape contemporary working lives. She has also served as co-director of Independent Dance in London,
and leads its MA/MFA Creative Practice partnership with Trinity Laban.

Come and join us for second event of the Dance and Legal Materialities Network, which focuses on Archiving movement and moving in the archives. This event will feature three short provocations from dance artists and researchers Russell Patrick Brown, Heni Hale, and Sarah Whatley. No dance experience is needed and all levels of participation (including no participation!) are invited. There will be space for sharing and discussion and all practitioners/researchers/artists interested in legal materialities, movement, embodied practices, libraries and social justice and more, are welcome.

The Dance and Legal Materialities Network explores how dance can animate legal materials. Led by IALS librarian Marilyn Clarke, legal researcher Marie Andree Jacob and dance artist/researcher Anna Macdonald, this new network is part of the Law and Humanities Hub at IALS. It brings dance methods into conversation with legal texts — asking how embodied practice can open new, decolonial ways of reading, writing, amending and archiving law.

Its great and a bit rare for me to be sharing performance research soon. I'm still curious what it will be....
Its called Memory Machine: Acts of Witnessing. We're exploring how relational movement practices, poetic sonic states and archive materials from a 1950s study of automation in a Manchester sulphur factory meet, resonate and collide, We attend to our own acts of witnessing, encounters that tangle remote histories into our lived bodily experiences. I'm so enjoying researching with the collaborative thinking, movement commitment and generosity of Our Tiny Factory - @alicegalefeeny @alexandrabaybutt.movement @benash_wayfaring Rachel Lopez @lopezdelanieta
and we will be joined in the growing factory soon by colleagues @julietscottartist and Annja Neumann from Tavistock Institute @tihr_arts.
Big Thanks to film-maker Tony Wadham @sputnikwadham and all those at Wellcome Collection who facilitated a recent PhD placement there which helped this event happening.

The event has limited capacity and the 4th November is now full and running a long waiting list but if anyone wants to see it and can make a dress rehearsal on Monday 3rd Nov please DM me.

For more about the event see link in bio.

This work forms part of my Practice as Research PhD, with Centre for Dance Research, Coventry University @cdare_cu and Tavistock Institute, whose 75 + yr archive is held as part of Wellcome Collection. Its a CDA funded by AHRC through @midlands4cities

Sadly I can't make this summer school this time, but wanted to share - it looks to be a super exciting few days of collective experimenting in the beautiful and radical Luca School of the Arts in Ghent with a fantastic line up of artists working on edges of philosophy, sound, movement design. A special opportunity for creative dance practictoners. Field Studies is associated with the brilliant Musarc choir that I was delighted to join last year. Places are still available but running out fast - I recommend getting in touch via link in the video. x
