Practice in Motion happened last weekend, what a feat! Over 2 days 20+ artists contributed their work, care, humour and invention; everyone mucked in with making it happen; there were some brilliant conversations, challenging provocations and awe-inspiring thinking. THANKS to my co-organisers @gretagauhe and @_teddyhunter - this took some courage and conviction! A massive thank you to our keynote artists @florence_peake , @evestainton , @atdeb_atart, Deborah Di Meglio and @tarafteh, Tara Fatehi for being such brilliant artists and sharing their practices and thinking with us. And to all the brilliant contibuting artists listed below, and to @beth.greenhalgh.11 for production support. Thanks @oldprintworksbrum for the space and to the lovely adjacent cafe @changekitchen. Thanks to @midlands4cities for funding this to make it possible. And thanks to those who attended - artists, locals and curious folk bringing their witnessing, questioning and ideas to the table. We experienced a great sense of flow and interconnection between performances, presentations, installations and conversations. Questions surfaced about institutional contexts, how we make use of them and what is at stake; exercising solidarity in decolonising practises within the academy; productivity and desire; archives and rock time; AI algorithms within creativity, witnessing as with-nessing and much more... We hope everyone took something away from the experience. Thank you to all participating artists: @itsykki - Frances Yeung @juliapond_ Julia Pond @mpasut9 - Melissa Pasut Alexah Tomey-Alleyne @uhmeeleeuh_krowtch - Amelia Crouch @timothiellim - Timothi Lim @lorenmck_ Loren McK @manualbrecht - Manuela Albrecht Jake Parry @mgerussi - Michaela Gerussi Marguerite Galizia @dam.fino -Joel Blackledge @klaudia_f_w - Klaudia Wittmann with collaborator Lara Ritosa-Roberts @ning_zin -Zining Liu With collaborators’ Hongwei Peng(programmer) and Ash Xu (visual designer) Photos- Greta Gauhe 1: Teddy, Greta and Heni opening 2: Greta's installation 3: Teddy's installation 4: Florence and Eve 5: Tara Fatehi - Parakeets 6: Heni Hale 7: Manuela Albrecht 8: Melissa pasut 9:Klaudia Wittman 10: Amelia Crouch

Last week was an absolute whirlwind. On Tuesday, I opened my practice research PhD exhibition, bringing together the projects and practice outputs that have shaped the last few years of my research. It was an enormous amount of work, but seeing everything gathered in one space made it all worthwhile. More importantly, it was a privilege to witness people engaging with the work, experiencing it for themselves and sharing their responses. The exhibition also formed part of the examination of my practice. A big thank you to @heni_hale for joining me in the evening, presenting her own work and for our conversation about practice research and the realities of PhD life. My research on remote touch has spanned a range of contexts, from domestic audio experiences and outdoor performances to a final project created with and for people living with chronic pain. Along the way, I explored what aspects of touch matter most when physical touch is absent, who these approaches are for, how temporality shifts towards slower and more sustained forms of engagement, and how flexibility, access and co-creation can become creative methods in their own right. One of the things that has stayed with me throughout this process is the question of impact. In a world that often asks us to define success through measurable outcomes, this research has encouraged me to value the experiences that are harder to quantify: moments of connection, reflection, comfort, curiosity, imagination and care. I am forever grateful to my supervisors, @meehanemma and @rosasencisfilms, a true female powerhouse who have supported, challenged and championed this work from the beginning. And to my rock/co-creator @atdeb_atart - thank you for everything. Big thank you to my funding partner @midlands4cities and to @cdare_cu @covuni . There are so many more thoughts I could share, but for now, I’d better get back to submitting that thesis... Images (mostly) by @dominicfarlam

After four years of research, making, collecting, filming, recording and reflecting, my PhD exhibition At a Touching Distance is finally here. It feels surreal to be sharing the work and practice that has shaped so much of my life over the past four years. I’m very excited to open this up and share it with everyone, the installations, film, audio recordings, field notes, traces and encounters that have developed through this journey. I’m also incredibly excited that @heni_hale will be joining me in the evening session from 6:30pm onwards to share aspects of her practice through a live contribution, which will then open into a dialogue together. The daytime exhibition (11am–3pm) is open access, so please feel free to drop in anytime. For the evening programme (6:30pm–9pm), booking is required (via link or QR code). I’d love to see you there. The exhibition includes works by my collaborators @atdeb_atart , @hannahhh_adamsss , @flavien.cornilleau , @johannamerceron & @marta_stepien_ and photography taken during previous events by @dominicfarlam. It also includes works by research participants. I am forever grateful for their contributions. It also includes a film created together with @jocorkdancedigi and @atdeb_atart. Special thanks go to @atdeb_atart for her ongoing contributions without whom non of this would have been possible. Thank you also to my supervisors @rosasencisfilms and @meehanemma for their endless support and encouragement. 📍 Temporary Art Gallery 📅 2 June 2026 @cdare_cu @covuni @midlands4cities

Can’t believe one week has passed since Metabolizer closed with a marathon dance day of 10.5 hours. Very grateful to @37looestreet for the rich hosting and dialoguing, to everyone aged 8 to 80 (literally!) who came to dance in the pod, or engaged with the Optimizer! companion performance series. It was a privilege to share space with the Optimizer! artists (in order of appearance) @manualbrecht @kyra_norman_ (with guest @angusbalbernie) @heni_hale @bryonygillard If you’re just hearing about all this now, Metabolizer is an interactive installation critiquing economic growth and exhaustion through data, and more and more and more dancing. There is an office pod for invisible dancing and a dashboard tracking the real time fluctuations in the data produced by the dancing. It is joyful, exhausting, poignant and a bit crazy (according to reporting from Metabolizer dancers). Finally this work forms a practical part of the PhD research I have been working on @ksa_research_hub supported by @technedtp And do get in touch if you’d like to see Metabolizer arrive in your neck of the woods…til then the pod is hibernating …

Heni Hale is sharing some of recent embodied work with archives and consent, in a presentation/ screening in the law library, as part of the ARHC Dance and Law Festival of Practice It is running twice near the end of both ‘library tours’ (11-1.00 and 3-6.00) – don’t miss it. Book via link in bio. Title: Consent in Suspension This is an experimental set-up that addresses consent or lack of consent when working with archive materials and historical documents. Via a presentation and video assemblage, Heni will share her ethical dilemmas when eavesdropping on a past community or culture that stirs difficult responses to perceived power relations. The archive video footage is of a social science simulation experiment that researchers from Tavistock Institute of Human Relations carried out in 1976 with a merchant navy shipping company called Jebsens, as an exercise in industrial democracy. Through the examination of the various layers of gaze both in the archive footage and in the present, the aim is to invite us all to recognise how consent is entangled with our acts of witnessing. The footage is quite deteriorated and poor sound quality will be supported by captioning. Image credit – stills from Borgnes Seminar. Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).
