#tbt to a sunny Alpine climb and half-decent legs. The Classic Climb feature in the current issue of @cyclist_mag is on the Col du Galibier, which stands at 2642m. Everyone say happy birthday 🫵

It’s a high bar, but the VW Golf GTI Edition 50 might just be the best GTI in the model’s illustrious history.

In this episode of The Driver’s Seat, @henrycatchpole bounces a ball on a pitching wedge. He also tests the latest (and greatest?) GTI on some spectacular moorland roads as well as heading to Bedford Autodrome for a track day. Henry also looks back at some of Volkswagen’s wilder GTI concepts and discusses whether the mk8.5 has fixed any or all of the mk8’s litany of issues.

A bit of a throwback Thursday to a whirlwind trip to the US earlier in the summer, when I drove the 2031bhp Hennessey Venom F5 Roadster Revolution Evolution Stealth (and saw the new Blackbird). It was a fairly aviation heavy trip, because as well as seeing the SR-71B and the F-117 Nighthawk in the @airzoo_ we also stumbled across the @rafredarrows almost as soon as we arrived, which felt slightly strange. Had a nice chat to one of the engineers. The Aerospace seemed appropriate. Film, featuring most of this, can still be found on @hagerty by @henrycatchpole

A few snaps from the Morgan shoot last month. I really was so impressed with the Supersport 400. And even if buying one of their cars is out of reach, I’d thoroughly recommend a factory tour in Malvern. There’s even decent coffee in the cafe. The new Morgan Supersport 400 looks a million dollars, but is not a limited run restomod with a seven-figure price tag.

It is the most powerful and possibly the best model that the company has made since 1909. It might also be a beacon for the whole performance car industry, because the Supersport blends restomod with mainstream in a very inspiring way.

In this episode of The Driver’s Seat, @henrycatchpole takes a look behind the scenes at the Morgan factory on Pickersleigh Road to see how the company is embracing technology to preserve its past. We see the latest, exclusive Midsummer Coupe, watch metal being worked, wood being fashioned and find a very early, three-wheeled Morgan from the company’s long history.

I’m not in Monterey with the rest of the car world, but I did go to Spain a few weeks ago to see the new Aston Martin Valen, which has just been unveiled in all its Andromeda Red glory at The Quail. A film with all the details is on the @hagerty YouTube channel (It’s even got some interesting tyre tech). Great job by @glennwinhall and @samgriley with the visuals - @calvertstudios looking as spectacular as ever. Link in bio/stories.

Some say that filming this for @hagerty was just an excuse to go and babble in front of an SR-71B over at the brilliant @airzoo_ … And I confess that was a big draw. But this new manual, naturally aspirated Hennessey Blackbird is also rather exciting and yet more evidence that the tide might be turning. More people prioritising feel and emotion over outright performance. Not that performance will be lacking with 850bhp.
Anyway, it was a great couple of days filming with @glennwinhall and @bdub_visuals. Thank you for all the kind comments on the film and my ramblings about both cars and plane. by @henrycatchpole

Meet the Hennessey Blackbird.

Yes, this one is blue. Ignore that.

The new Hennessey Blackbird is resolutely analogue, with a six-speed manual gearbox, a naturally aspirated engine and no screens in the cabin. Even better, the hypercar’s design has taken inspiration from the iconic SR-71 Blackbird from which it gets its name.

On this latest episode of The Driver's Seat, @henrycatchpole looks round the new car and then takes a 2013bhp Hennessey Venom F5 Stealth on a road trip to the Kalamazoo Aerospace and Science Museum to see the only SR-71B in existence.

How do you fix a bad car? Put a good one underneath it.

On the latest episode of The Driver's Seat, @henrycatchpole is visiting @retropowercars, home of some of the most unique and ambition projects we've ever seen.

If your automotive dream is an Austin Allegro with carbon fibre bodywork and Honda Integra Type R underpinnings or a Saab 900 that drives like an Audi RS, then this is the place to get it done.

And if Gordon Murray commissioned them to build him a custom Mk1 Escort, then it's probably safe to say they're doing a pretty good job.
