Now that the dust has settled on the Tesla Roadster, where does it stand?

The extravagant launch event has left everyone with plenty of questions. Possibly even more than we started with.

All we can really surmise is that something that looked like a car flew, hovered, kick-flipped, however you want to label it. But that aerobatic PR stunt also overshadowed something pretty extraordinary; the "normal" Roadster.

No, it's not the car we saw in 2017, as the world that car would have been born into changed so drastically, that the very ethos of it had to be reconfigured. And that new configuration is something properly impressive, even without needing FAA clearance.

If you want to learn more about the car that will actually be on the road, @henrycatchpole interviewed Tesla's VP of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, and got all the details on the latest edition of The Driver's Seat.

14/01/2018 was the day I started spotting cars in Bombay. It was the first time in my life I was surrounded by so many cool cars. But one of them in particular was my dream car, it was the Lamborghini Huracan Performante finished in Verde Mantis with black centre lock wheels. The moment I laid eyes on that car, I knew, without a shadow of doubt that this is my favourite car and it’s a car that I will own one day.

Cut to, 18/10/2026, a regular sunday morning stroll around town with @jxshkxthari and we stumble across this parked in the lanes of Kala Ghoda. I cussed Jash to stop the car and get off before he could even park the car properly. And as soon as I stood in front of this, I was that same Nirmeet from 2018, with that gleam in my eyes and found myself just staring in awe of how beautiful the Performante looks, even after almost a decade!

There’s just something about a Huracan Perf that I can’t seem to understand, the way it makes me feel, and I have been fortunate enough to see some truly beautiful and rare cars over the years but this thing just gives me the fizz like no other car I have ever seen. And I think that’s what makes Lambos so special, you love them the same way you did when you first saw them as kids and for me that makes this car priceless.

Controls: mechanical. Throttle: split in two. Touchscreens: none.
Inside EJET, even the central gauge is mechanical. It shows the kilowatts going to each wheel, where a rev counter used to be. The rest sits on a transparent display, so your eyes stay on the apex.
The split pedal lets your foot send more power to the left motor or the right. It takes learning. Good.
For the track, the seat and steering column move to the center. Bring a wrench.

Hey, remember when Jaguar was SO DAMN COOL not so many years ago? The project 8 was SUCH a mental car and seeing one last weekend (not for sale) when I was roaming around Land Rover West Chester def amped me up a bit. Huge HP (600!), all wheel drive, proper touring race car underpinnings and the fattest wide body panels outside of a DTM race with a 200 MPH top speed (!!!!). I still think these are one of the coolest, strangest 4 doors that’s ever been made and def makes me yearn for when Jaguar meant more than a passing joke on horrific rebrand and marketing campaign and less than ideal future product planning (seriously, why). The want to use this as a wild daily driver is pretty wild…just don’t want to imagine what would happen if you ever got into a fender bender, parts have to be kind of hard to get 😂😂. #jaguar #project8 #sportscar #dtm #carspot

Has VW fixed the MK8 Golf's interior?

Well, yes and no. In the latest episode of The Driver's Seat, @henrycatchpole takes a look at the MK8.5 Golf Edition 50, Volkswagens golden anniversary present to its venerable hot hatch.

It gets more power, more handling prowess, and more stickers, but more importantly, they have listened to some of the complaints about the current-generation's misses, especially on the inside.

Questa volta alzo la posta in gioco e mi faccio più coraggioso, entrando nelle curve più forte e spingendomi ancora più vicino al limite dell’aderenza del telaio. Non c’è un’anima nel raggio di chilometri e scelgo le traiettorie migliori che riesco a trovare.

Sento l’anteriore mordere, carico il fianco degli pneumatici, percepisco per un attimo il limite dell’avantreno che si sposta appena, tengo il gas e mi fido del retrotreno… Ecco l’aderenza. Azzecco l’uscita e mi preparo per la curva successiva, che arriva rapidamente emergendo dalla luce bassa del sole della sera.

Quando tutto va come deve, è un mix di aderenza brutale e meravigliosa fluidità.

Alla fine, con i brividi addosso e la pelle d’oca, rientro lentamente nel primo villaggio, lascio la frizione e mi fermo accanto al prato del paese. Mentre il metallo caldo del motore inizia a raffreddarsi, tintinnando, penso seriamente di tornare indietro per fare un altro giro.

Saranno passati dieci anni da quando avevo attaccato con il PataFix quel poster alla parete della mia camera, ma ne è valsa decisamente la pena aspettare."
