I am thrilled to announce my new book, Twelve Acres, published by @twinpalmspublishers. This work reimagines the peaks and valleys of a defining teenage friendship in the Ozark back country we called home.

Twelve Acres depicts boyhood outside of city limits, in the shadows of sycamores, away from institutions and the pressures of social order. In a progression through the seasons, a restlessness presses in, a longing to stave oﬀ the rupture of entering an adult reality with its monotony and responsibilities. In this meditation on personal history, worlds quiver in a chaos of past and present forms. Tops spin. Animals with thirst cup liquid light. Memory remains a mystery. Twelve Acres is a reverie, wherein the past re-emerges as boys with tick-bitten feet, ears ringing from homemade explosives, clothes stained by the smoke of shoplifted cigarettes, and arms stretched toward higher branches.

Always coming back to this work. William Gedney stayed with and photographed the Cornett family in east Kentucky in 1964 & 1972. Unlike so many other documentary photographers that leered from the outside looking in, Gedney inhabited the world of his subjects fully and with care. These and the rest of his archive are available online via Duke University’s digital library by @henryohead

We are excited to invite you to our first workshop with Henry O. Head. In today’s saturated landscape, it’s not easy to find a fresh perspective – one that is both new and mature. With Twelve Acres, Henry has drawn heavily from the American photographic tradition while turning his camera inward, shaping a deeply intimate body of work.

This five-day retreat is designed for photographers who are developing personal projects and want to create work that feels more cohesive and connected to their own lives and experiences. It is a chance for attendees to cultivate and take greater authorship over their unique point of view.

By the end of the workshop, participants will leave with new insights into their ongoing projects, practical strategies for moving their work forward, and a clearer understanding of what makes their photographic voice unique.

Fayettevillle lost one of its best and brightest this week. Andrew Kilgore documented life in this town for just shy of 60 years. Inspired by Irving Penn & Avedon, the bulk of his career was spent making portraits in his home studio. But it’s the early work he made in the 70s that always moved me the most. Learning as he went, with no guardrails or aesthetic boundaries, Andrew created freely. The whole town was his muse and his photographs, like him, were unafraid to be sincere.
