A project that’s been on my mind for years came to fruition in time for @sketcherfest this summer… A WALK IN THE MARKET is an art book (limited to 100 copies) collects 30 of my favorite sketches & writing from my favorite place in Seattle. Risographed cover, hand-sewn binding, lovely cold press textured paper. It’s a special thing! Link in my bio for your copy.

I also adapted my @sketcherfest talk about the “making of” this book into a video on my YouTube page if you want all the gory details about its creation.

Ahoy! I'm now hosting my monthly live painting demos on my new Vivify pod @vivify.ai -- link in bio. The next one is this Friday at 5pm PST. (the time alternates between morning and evening so more ppl can enjoy!)

For around the price of a latte per month, you can join the community and get access to recordings as well as my live online demos. Besides interacting on the stream and accessing recordings, you'll be able to upload your work based on the sessions, and suggest reference photos for me to work from. And more..!

I'll also upload some exclusive content -- for example, you can see my palette of mixed media materials I took on my most recent trip, and some artwork I haven't posted elsewhere.

I was hosting these demos via my Substack for the last year, but I felt that the platform wasn't quite right for this content. While I will still be publishing my writing+sketches over there, I think Vivify is a better fit.

(PS if you are a premium subscriber on substack and want to move, i am happy to facilitate, just DM me)

I hope you'll try it out, even just for a month or two! See you Friday? by @herbcoil

Early fall visit to Portland 🍁 bringing my bike on the amtrak was the MOVE 🚲 It was such a nice way to get around town for all the activities (except for a couple rainy hours)

I live sketched a wedding (so fun, so hard!!), gave a talk at @visitahc, and taught a workshop during my 3 day visit. Did I take any pictures at those things? Uhh, barely. 🤦

It was so lovely to meet some of the sketching community - especially @pdxusk admin @amystewart who encouraged me to do 2 of these things way back at @sketcherfest . I am very persuadable 🙌

Last week, we announced our next demo in our Live Demo Series: Parallel Pen Play with Eleanor Doughty (@herbcoil)—link in bio!
💙
Join us online on Wednesday, October 14th at noon Pacific to explore varying line weight with Pilot Parallel Pens. These pens are ideal for building a strong value structure and are an excellent tool for transforming mundane scenes into a striking sketch!
🖋️
What to Bring

• Pens: Pilot Parallel Pens, any fountain pen with a fude (bent) nib, or a square-tipped calligraphy marker with waterproof ink.

• Marker/Watercolors: A light-colored brush pen or thick marker, or your favorite watercolors for adding over your waterproof ink sketch.

• Brushes: A favorite round brush.

• Paper: Smooth, heavyweight paper, such as hot press or lightly-textured cold press.

• BONUS: Eleanor shared her amazing, illustrated downloadable resource, “Drawing with Calligraphy Pens.” This 8-page PDF is a perfect, concise guide to calligraphy pens, offering tips, exercises, and ways to modify your tools. Find it via our Events page link in our bio.

Join us online for our next live demo, Parallel Pen Play with Eleanor Doughty (@herbcoil) on Wednesday, October 14th at noon Pacific—link in bio!
🖋️
Calligraphy pens can create an amazing range of line widths and effects depending on the angle and pressure applied. In this demo, we will explore varying line weight in our sketches as Eleanor demonstrates how to use Pilot Parallel Pens, an accessible yet powerful tool that works as well for drawing and dynamic mark-making as it does for calligraphy writing, for which it was originally developed!
🌳
These pens are ideal for building a strong value structure—an important foundation for all urban sketching—and are an excellent tool for transforming mundane scenes into a striking sketch! We hope to see you there!
👩🏻‍💻
Not able to join us live? The demo recording will be available shortly after the live session on our Demos page, link in bio!

I am giving a book talk in Portland in a couple weeks! It's free, just RSVP at the link in my bio. It would be great to see you there :^)
---

A Walk in the Market (2026) is an art book by Eleanor Doughty documents daily life in Seattle's Pike Place Market between 2019 and 2026 through sketches created on location.

Inspired by Victor Steinbrueck's "Market Sketchbook" (1968), this volume carries on the tradition of drawing from life in this dynamic and special place. It's part walking guide, part art book, part documentation of Pike Place in this era.

Echoing the "meet the producer" mission of the Market, the book itself was self-produced as a small run of art books, using all Seattle-sourced materials and makers.

This book talk will introduce Pike Place Market, detail the nitty-gritty of executing an artisanal book project, and share how documenting daily life in a sketchbook can be transformative. taken in Portland Oregon by @herbcoil
