Last week, Hercules Wimbledon Athletic Club men took the South of England cross-country title for the first time in 56 years as they overcame consecutive runner-up finishes to beat the best in the South of England. The Senior Men have now gone, third, second, second and first in the last four years, outlining their position as one of the best cross-country sides in the country.
Hercules six counters scored a combined total of 126 points to Aldershot, Farnham and District’s 138, as depth showed on a history-making day in Beckenham Place Park.

Watched on by a winner from the 1970 side, Mike Fuller, over the roughly 14km muddy course, Alex Milne backed up his fourth place from last year to lead the Hercules assault home in seventh, three weeks before he takes on the Seville marathon in a bid to lower his 2:14 best. Sub-14 minute 5km runner Andrew Penney was next home in 13th, narrowly ahead of Jonathan Cornish in 15th. At this stage of the competition Aldershot’s first three counters had a combined score of 18 to Hercules 35 but it was in the final three that the damage was done. Fred Slemeck, a scorer in each of the now four consecutive podium sides finished in 22nd, with Stu McCallum 33 seconds back in 31st. What followed was a scrap for the final scoring places as cross-country captain, James Stockings, another now four-time medalist, edged out Ed Mallett by seven seconds, 38th place to 40th. The gap between the pair, again for the final scoring place last year was 11 seconds, again going the way of Stockings. Joe Bryant, in 49th can also count himself unlucky not to take home some silverware of his own. With Aldershot’s final scorer coming home in 60th, the victory was secured by 12 points taken in Beckenham Place Park by @herculeswimbledon

FOUR IN A ROW! @herculeswimbledon win the Surrey League for the sixth time in their history.

With three match wins from four, they topped the table all season to finish 129pts ahead of challengers Belgrave - who themselves recorded the best points total for a second placed team since 2015.

Congratulations to all at Herc for another brilliant campaign.

Streaks to beat?
🐎 Kent AC won six in a row between 2013 and 2018.
🔴🟡 Belgrave won seven between 1966 and 1972.
🔴🟢 Aldershot, no longer of this parish, won THIRTEEN consecutive titles between 1973 and 1985.

SCVAC VETS LEAGUE WINNERS

For the first time in #herculeswimbledon history, the women not only got to the final, they won the league!! 🍾🍾🥳🥳

It was incredibly close, by just half a point! So many brilliant performances across the day on both the track and the field.

Wimbledon                      268

2 Tonbridge                         267.5

3 Oxford City                      219

4 Southampton                 199.5

5 Serpentine                       149

6 Barnet & District            146

The men's team also made the final, a tough feat to come ahead of seven other teams to get there. They came 5th out of 7th overall.

Well done to everyone who competed, what a way to end the season! taken in Horspath Road Athletics Track by @herculeswimbledon

In this week's piece we sat down with 2:11 man and World 50km Champion, Alex Milne.

Milne's rise from two failed sub-three attempts to a European record holder is a lesson in leaning into your weaknesses, learning from disappointments and mercilessly marching on.

I think anyone at any level can take something away from Milne's journey, one that continues to be a big source of inspiration to clubmates and compatriots following along behind.

"Learn to lose, the 18 year making of Alex Milne" is out now, link in gjmallett bio.

A few months ago I was in a boot… now I’m feeling stronger than I ever have!

I’m just really grateful to be back doing what I love- and I’m trying to take it all in (even if I’m smiling a bit too much in race photos 😅)

It hasn’t been the easiest few months, which makes this period even more special — including winning ERRA National Road Champs 🥇
I also had the opportunity to meet @jakeswightman and @philybowden , who have both been major inspirations to me throughout my injury.

Thank you to my teammates and coaches, and especially my parents — for being there through everything and helping me get back to competing 🫶

I’m proud of the work behind this, and excited for what’s to come.

Alex Milne - World Champion, European record holder and one of our own.

At 4am this morning, Hercules' own Alex Milne set out for 50k round the streets of New Delhi. Three months ago this World 50k Championships was cancelled due to high pollution levels. 90 days later, conditions had improved but athletes still faced temperatures in excess of 20 degrees and air quality lower than ideal.

Milne has, since he joined the club in 2019, been part of a generation that has continued to set new heights as a senior endurance group. A proud member of the Southern cross country senior mens winning squad, Alex is seen as regularly donning his spikes round the mud of Lloyd Park or the former landfill site of Mitcham Common.

Alex will be the first to admit, his progress has been steady. Others performances may have grabbed the plaudits, but the 35-year-old's rise has been relentless.

County to international vest, over the marathon and further he has found a home. 2:14 in a hot London in 25, a Loch Ness Marathon record that autumn, it wasn't perhaps until Seville this February that Milne got the credit his pursuit of better had long made overdue.

2:11:41 then, just four weeks later in the heat of the Indian capital, Milne passed through the marathon distance in 2:17. The best of Japan, the USA and the rest had departed and in his tow lay only the best of Britain. An unprecedented day for British ultra-running.

Less than 8k later, Milne was a world champion, the European record shattered in 2:46:09. Five other GB athletes followed him homem

14th March 2026, Hercules has their first senior world champion. For Milne, don't bet against better being yet to come. by @herculeswimbledon

Alex Milne of @herculeswimbledon wins the Mitchell Cup for leading individual in the senior men's top flight.

The three-time team prize winner jumps from fifth last season to top of the table in 25/26, having also been 5th in 2019/20. That's enduring quality right there.

The top five individuals (athletes must run all four fixtures to be eligible for the Mitchell Cup):

1. Alex Milne H/W 32 (11, 12, 6, 3)
2. Tom Foster G&G 64 (14, 15, 16, 19)
3. Morgan Roberts HHH 66 (25, 16, 17, 8)
4. Henry Hart BEL 75 (29, 17, 19, 10)
5. Kieran Barnes 108 (37, 23, 33, 15)
