15+ years later, back in the streets!

Dude, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared or nervous stepping back into street skating... There’s a big difference between skating a park and putting yourself out there on the streets again after all these years. The streets humble you, and oftentimes, they make you better.

This month, I’ve had the privilege of skating alongside PJ Ladd and I gotta say, having his support and encouragement has been huge. I grew up watching him skate, and his video parts always inspired me to get better. These past few weeks, we’ve been skating and lifting together, and seeing how he pushes himself both on and off the board has helped me believe in my own skating a little more.

This past weekend, I was able to get out of my comfort zone and try some new things on my board. The icing on the cake was having Jaime Owens behind the camera capturing the moment. Still riding the high from this session and grateful that all my strength training I've put in over the years is paying off.

2 years ago I stepped on stage for the first time in 9 years.
It was a surreal moment when I stood up there holding a 1st place trophy. But what made this moment even more special was having my clients and friends in the crowd, supporting me while I chased something I had given my all to.

I love inspiring people around me and having my clients there made me realize just how much that goes both ways... I push them to become a better version of themselves, and chase things that challenge them. That day they reminded me to do the same and for that I'll be forever grateful. by @heroicstrength

My client Ryan is currently training to become Spider-Man at Disneys California Adventure. He's always been enamored with stunts so this year he took a leap of faith and went all in with both acrobatic and strength training.

Here are a few clips of what I have him do in the weight room along with what his acrobatics coach has him do as well.

Super proud of Ryan for pushing himself to reach his goal. by @heroicstrength

To all my athletes or anyone else dealing with knee pain, this one's for you. Since getting back into skating I've realized just how much stress our knees, ankles, calves and hips take during every session.

Knee pain sucks and if we don't take care of our bodies, it can keep us sidelined from the activities we love to do.

Here are a few of my favorite exercises to build strength and resilience through the knees, ankles, calves and hips.

- Poliquin Step Down
- Barbell RDL
- Rear Foot Elevated Split Squat
- Split squat w/calf raise
- Hips Elevated Banded Knee Tuck
- Lateral Hops

For Strength exercises I'd start with 2 sets each. For the lateral hops, calf raises and banded knee tucks shoot for 3 sets each.
Keeping your volume low and intensity moderately high can help you recover in time for your next activity. by @heroicstrength

Hip flexors are one of the most underrated muscle groups for explosive athletic performance. They play a key role in sprinting, jumping, and controlling your body through powerful movements.

If you’re an athlete or just want to improve your explosiveness then here are 3 exercises you can add to your routine twice a week to build stronger, more explosive hip flexors.

- Rear Foot Elevated Split Squat Jumps: Do these first in your workout. Legs need to be fresh for this one. Aim for 5 reps each and 2-3 sets.

- 1-Leg Cable Knee Drive: 2-3x 10-12 reps each

- Lying Cable Knee Tuck: 3x 10-20 reps

Warming up for any sport or intense activity is very important. There are many different ways to warm up but you should always choose a warm that's specific to the activity.

A proper warm up can help minimize injury but more importantly, it preps the body for the session ahead. This may lead to a better session and help you connect with your body more.

Try these drills and share it with your 🛹 bros!

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to train a lot of couples and I still do to this day. While I may coach them individually, one of the most rewarding parts is watching fitness become a shared part of their lives. Some even ask me to write programs they can follow while they’re traveling. As a coach, that’s one of the greatest compliments. It tells me they’ve built habits that go far beyond the gym.

Being in Tuscany with Jaré reminded me that no matter where we are, fitness is part of our lives. It keeps us grounded, gives us the energy to experience more together, and builds resilience in our relationship. For us, it’s non-negotiable and it’s incredibly rewarding to see so many of my clients embrace that same mindset.
