POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

The two people behind all of this.

Hester is from the Netherlands and has always been a dreamer - the one who looks at a hillside and sees a classroom. Dawit is Ethiopian and more of a strategic realist - the one who asks who is paying for it and when the container ships.

They have worked together in Ethiopia since 2009. Bette Buna came in 2020, after almost two decades of creating opportunities, mentoring communities and building systems that empower people. The company was not the beginning of the work. It was the point at which the work needed an engine.

Ask them anything in the comments - about the farms, the training, the coffee, or why anyone would build a business this complicated when a simpler one was available. They answer these themselves.

Put people first. Everything else is logistics.

My daughters Bette and Fana started together with Bette Buna a club by kids, for kids in our coffee coffee community of Taferi Kela!

Using football as a tool to teach so much more, with one goal; kids in Taferi Kela dream bigger and pursue these dreams.

As one of our favourite movies quotes:

"Don't ever let somebody tell you that you can't do something. You got a dream? You gotta protect it. If people can't do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can't do it. If you want something.. go get it. Period".

You can contribute to this important project to transform communities.

📣New project alert!: Bette Buna Kids Project
Starting September 2025.

BBKP creates lasting change for children in our coffee community of Taferi Kela, where only 5% of first cycle students pass their national exam. As more than 70% of our community is younger than 30 years it’s clear that kids are crucial for the future of our coffee community and yóúr coffee.

Our goal is to help boys and girls stay in school and succeed, equipping with the right skills, and ensuring they can change their future.

BBKP core activities:

Scholarships: Financial support to reduce barriers preventing children from continuing their education.

Sports Programs: Using sports to empower personal growth, community engagement, and encourage role modelling to motivate other students.

Empowerment programs: Equipping girls and boys with the necessary skills to navigate challenges from early childhood through adolescence.

Family Support: Investing in mothers of BBKP-kids through inclusive jobs at Bette Buna, savings programs, and financial literacy training.

Soon more about this project on our website! by @hester.syoum
