We’re so excited to share something that we’ve been up to this summer - bees!! The Hewits Hive, also known as J Hewit & Daughters, is run by our Queen Bee Janet, and we couldn’t be happier with our new coworkers 🐝

We decided to sponsor a hive because bees are a vital part of the countryside around us. They spend their days busily moving from flower to flower, helping plants and crops along the way. The farms where the Kin Bees’ apiaries are located have experienced a near 15% increase in crop yields — so Janet and the girls are clearly pulling their weight!

Soon you’ll be able to buy Hewits Beeswax on our website that is produced from our hive and the other hives in the Kin Bees family, and next year we’re really looking forward to our honey harvest - if you’re lucky you might just get your hands on some!

To find out more about our hive, we encourage you to click the link in our bio to read about them 🐝 We hope to have updates throughout the year that we’ll share with you all on our socials, and soon we’ll post a Q&A with Gael from Kin Bees.

A Nipping Press Built to Last, and Built Responsibly.

Handcrafted in Scotland by our master carpenter, our Wooden Nipping Press is a beautiful, sustainable alternative to cast iron - made with care, built for life, and kind to the planet.

Every press is locally made from FSC and PEFC certified timber, ensuring each is a one-of-a-kind piece, not a factory product. You’ll find the same attention to detail in your press as you put into your own bookbinding.

Weighing in at only 7.5KG, this press is far more portable than its traditional cast iron cousin - no stress getting this to your third floor flat!

Add a personal touch with a laser-engraved phrase or logo on the platen, truly making your press a part of your bindery.

To find out more, check the link in our bio.

We’re nearing the end of #scotclimateweek 2026, so we wanted to take a moment to highlight some of the ways in which we try to care for the environment and our local area.

• All of our leather is produced in our on site tannery, and our skins are only from food by-product 🐄
• Our vegetable tans are sustainably sourced, and our leather is chrome free 🌳
• We’ve been reducing our gas usage for the last 16 years, and since our solar install in 2022 we’ve been partly running on our own electricity ⚡️
• We reuse nearly all the boxes and packaging that we get, and our staff eagerly bring in their own from home - have you ever wondered why your order has come in a cat food box? 📦
• In the last year, we’ve gone digital and have cut our paper usage by over 70% 📄
• We ran a TerraCycle point that collected over 200kg of hard to recycle plastics from our local community ♻️
• We donate our leather scraps to local schools and charities, so they can use them in arts and crafts sessions 🎨
• The Hewits Hive supports local biodiversity and bee populations 🐝

And on top of all of this, we’ve reduced our Carbon Footprint by over 30 tonnes in the last 7 years!

Sustainability isn’t something we consider finished, and we will continue to look at ways to make our operations more carbon friendly - we’re not a company that will stick a green label over something that a third party has been paid to offset.

If you want to learn more about our sustainability practices, including what we’ve not mentioned in this post, you can find out at the link in our bio 🔗

This little book, “Sixty Amusing and Instructive Fables, in French and English,” was printed in London in 1760 and designed principally for schools. The French and English texts appeared almost word for word beside each other, presumably allowing pupils to be confused in two languages at once.
What else was happening in 1760?
In Britain, George II died and his 22-year-old grandson became George III. The new king was the first Hanoverian monarch born in Britain and spoke English as his first language, a surprisingly useful qualification for the position.
London was full of coffee houses where customers could drink coffee, read newspapers, discuss politics and conduct business. Some eventually developed into major institutions, including Lloyd’s of London. Coffee shops were already combining caffeine, gossip and financial speculation.
France remained under Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour still exercised considerable influence at court. Paris also opened a new local postal service, allowing residents to send one another messages without waiting for the invention of WhatsApp.
Meanwhile, France and Britain were fighting each other across several continents during the Seven Years’ War. Two days ago, in 1760, France surrendered Montreal to the British.
