This little book, “Sixty Amusing and Instructive Fables, in French and English,” was printed in London in 1760 and designed principally for schools. The French and English texts appeared almost word for word beside each other, presumably allowing pupils to be confused in two languages at once.
What else was happening in 1760?
In Britain, George II died and his 22-year-old grandson became George III. The new king was the first Hanoverian monarch born in Britain and spoke English as his first language, a surprisingly useful qualification for the position.
London was full of coffee houses where customers could drink coffee, read newspapers, discuss politics and conduct business. Some eventually developed into major institutions, including Lloyd’s of London. Coffee shops were already combining caffeine, gossip and financial speculation.
France remained under Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour still exercised considerable influence at court. Paris also opened a new local postal service, allowing residents to send one another messages without waiting for the invention of WhatsApp.
Meanwhile, France and Britain were fighting each other across several continents during the Seven Years’ War. Two days ago, in 1760, France surrendered Montreal to the British.
