Not a bad day feeding the fishies

Despite all the different places in the world that I’ve done shark dives they all kind of have their own vibe. That said, the whole time on this dive I felt like I was back in South Florida diving the ledge. Maybe it’s just been on my mind lately, but there are so many similarities here that it was kind of nice to feel teleported home for the hour or so I was underwater.

Seeing great whites in South Africa has been a dream since I was a kid watching shark week. I was worried the opportunity disappeared when the orcas Port and Starboard showed up a decade ago. All I heard is that the white sharks are gone from here and largely that is true. It is incredibly sad to see an area that was once internationally known for these sharks that now has to face a reality without them. The companies that used to take people to see them have either closed down or had to hard shift to seeing more common sharks with less star power. The iconic “Air Jaws” hasn’t been seen around Cape Town for years. Fortunately they have not completely disappeared from South Africa and a drive out to Mossel Bay allowed us to see some little white sharks. Big sharks are rare, but we saw 4 baby white sharks ranging in size from 1.5-2.5m. It’s a glimmer of hope that they’re not all gone yet, but these little sharks have a lot of challenges ahead of them in an ocean with the odds stacked against them.

Photos from my first time taking @oceanraysphotography ‘s camera on a dive without her.
While I’ve used this camera to take photos and videos before it’s normally mid-dive that I’ll get to snap some shots after the settings have already been dialed in by the professional herself. I feel pretty comfortable with my little action cams, but adjusting settings and white balances the whole time while swimming through a kelp forest looking for cool creatures was stressful and had me feeling like a new diver. That said, it was such a cool experience and I’m excited to start delving more into real underwater photography. I now truly understand why people fall in love with this and it gives me more respect for all the photographers out there. It also helped that I had some little sharks to focus on and use as test models.

There’s a lot of cool shark species out there, but I feel like makos are undeniably the most badass. They are torpedos with a gnarly set of teeth. A shark perfectly built so they can hunt the fastest species of fish in the ocean. Sharing the water with them is always exciting to say the least!

This is the 4th location I have successfully seen great white sharks. I love getting to see these incredible animals and I never would have guessed 10 years ago how much time I would have spent diving and working with them. However, this trip to see them was unique for me as it is the only operation I’m seeing these sharks without staying to work here. I’ve just always heard good things and wanted to come see how they run it here. I wasn’t disappointed. Good sharks and good people. I mean it as a compliment when I say this is the simplest and low effort cage diving operations I’ve seen. Highly recommend for those who want to tick seeing great whites off the bucket list.

When looking for the world’s smallest dolphin in visibility where I can’t even see my own feet, I left my expectations at the shore.

Hector’s dolphin are found only in New Zealand and I thought if I was lucky I’d be able to catch a glimpse from the beach. Swimming with them though, surely just in my dreams. Fortunately for me these little guys were curious and friendly enough to swim up to me in chest deep water!

Longer story version: while sitting at the beach today I saw what I at least thought were fins not far beyond the break at the beach. Quickly I decided that was good enough sign for me to dawn a mask and boardshorts to try to get a closer look. As I started wading out I was able to confirm the rounded dorsals I thought I saw from land. I didn’t want to scare them off so I got to about chest deep in the water, made a couple little splashes to announce my presence, and then just waited hoping they would find me worth investigating. After a couple minutes I saw two dolphins surface alongside each other heading straight for me. In the shallow water I could watch them the whole time as they swam all the way up to me. A couple quick passes and then they were right back to playing in the surf. After catching a couple waves they came in to take another look before moving on down the beach. Absolutely surreal beach swim today!!

While I find all sharks beautiful, I think even those afraid of sharks would agree that zebra sharks are the most beautiful shark species. They have such a cute face, a long graceful tail, and that pattern 🔥 what a winning hand! I’ve seen them before in deep and/or green water, but getting to see them in shallow and blue water really lets their beauty show. I’m obsessed!
