🚨No mandatory pitch count doesn’t mean no need for rest🚨

Softball pitchers may not have the same mandatory pitch count rules as baseball, but that doesn’t mean their bodies don’t need time to recover.

Injuries happen when the body doesn’t have the capacity to handle the demands being placed on it.

If we continually ask the body to throw, compete, and perform without giving it the opportunity to restore strength and maintain mobility, we increase the risk of injury.

Taking care of your body is part of the process 💪🥎 by @hex_ptp

Hi everyone! 👋 My name is Emma, and I’m so excited to have joined the team here at Hex PTP as a Physical Therapist over the past month!

I grew up playing softball for Team PA and went on to play Division I softball at Towson University before earning my Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Duquesne University.
Outside of work, I enjoy staying active through CrossFit and Olympic weightlifting.

My passion is working with athletes… and that includes all levels, from adults pursuing fitness and performance goals to baseball and softball athletes looking to stay healthy and performing at their best.

I’m excited to continue to bring my experience as both an athlete and a physical therapist to the team and help athletes of all levels keep doing what they love! 💪🏋️‍♀️⚾️🥎 by @hex_ptp

GET IN THE WEIGHT ROOM 🏋️‍♀️🚨
Female athletes bias towards being more naturally mobile or “loose-jointed.” That mobility requires a lot of strength and control to manage the loads they’re asking their bodies to handle.

Strength training helps build capacity, control, and function.

Lifting weights isn’t unfeminine.
Being strong isn’t unfeminine.
Women don’t need to be fragile or meek.
Strong is powerful.
Every time you lift, you’re building the engine you’re asking to perform at its best everyday.

Not all baseball injuries are shoulders and elbows. Sometimes, one of your doofus patients rolls their ankle trying to grab a physioball off a shelf during a workout. REGARDLESS, we are here to help get your right now matter how uncoordinated you might be.

DITL

Giving the people what they want. I am officially an influencer now.

Here’s a small glimpse of what a Wednesday looks like for me. 10 patients between 7am-6pm.

I would LOVE a @polarseltzer care package to help me with my overpowering addiction.

Rehab wk 4: access of full ROM, deadlifting, power input.

This is the part where i actually have to be vigilant with my body. The excitement of real progress. Pain symptoms aren’t as loud as week 1, 2 or 3.
We are finding progress, but not pushing TOO far and forcing this process because results are really starting to show up.

@hex_ptp coupled with @quinzel.sports.massage and treatments from @joinmomentumhealth are showing RESULTS. 🏴‍☠️ by @hex_ptp

Post-Throw TLC

I’ll repeat myself until I am blue in the face about the idea that you will lose shoulder overhead motion after throwing at high intent. It is imperative that you address that between outings and over the course of the entire year.

Soft tissue work is not the only option for this, but it is certainly a good one. Some people call this “massage,” but I think @brandennbrownn would disagree with that.

IMPORTANCE OF STRONG INTERNAL ROTATORS

I have evaluated very few amateur baseball players with strong, or even adequate, internal rotation strength. Without enough IR strength, your body is going to look for ways to reduce the amount of demand on the internal rotators.

Your IRs are responsible for not only helping stabilize the front of the shoulder at max ER, but they’re also responsible for accelerating the arm forward into release.

Without adequate IR strength, you’re leaving MPH on the table and, most importantly, increasing your likelihood of injury.

With all the love that we give our external rotators with our “cuff work,” we have to remember to load up those internal rotators heavy!

HEX PTP IS OFFICIALLY A TEAM!

I am happy to announce the first addition to Hex PTP, @emma_strong27 . The first hire is often the most crucial, and once I met Emma, I knew she was the exact person I was looking for to grow the Hex PTP team.

Before earning her doctorate from Duquesne, Emma played 4 years of Division 1 softball at the University of Hartford (go Hawks) and Towson University. She also has an impressive background that combines experience with throwing biomechanics, return-to-throw programming, strength & conditioning, CrossFit, and coaching.

To all my Ravens fans, Emma is also a die-hard Pittsburgh sports fan….
Just be sure not to give her too much crap bc shes also a double black belt in Tae Kwon Do, so she could most likely kick your ass.

In all seriousness, I could not be more excited than I am to be bringing Emma on board. I have no doubt that she will help Hex PTP continue to provide the absolute highest-quality care to any and every patient seeking to return to sport or life at the best they’ve ever been. by @hex_ptp

If actually throwing a baseball is not part of your rehab, then what are you even doing?????

Tear your ACL or strain your hamstring, and you bet your butt you’re gonna be doing extensive plyometrics, sprinting, changing direction, and conditioning in your rehab.

Why is a UCL or shoulder injury any different?

Baseball rehab NEEDS to include throwing progressions as part of a comprehensive plan to get the player back to performing at their peak.

Don’t settle for sub-par “sports PT” where you spend 3/4 of your session doing banded ER and wall slides.

BTW this is me cherishing every last moment of being able to throw harder than @dash.c3 because it’s not gonna last much longer. Dude is SMASHING his TJ3 rehab.
