POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
I started this account as a blend between my personal pursuit of art and my gallery’s endeavors in the same arena. Many told me I couldn’t do that; it doesn’t work for the algorithm and it confuses people. But hold on, when was an algorithm ever good for art??!

With that said, I want to share something that happened four years apart but taken together illustrates how an artist can impact meaning based upon where, how, and when their work is delivered. It also speaks to how audiences consume art, can make it their own, and inspire an artist in the process.

In this case I am speaking of Nick Carpenter (aka Medium Build), a musician who delivers explosive performances whether alone with a guitar or backed by his band. I first saw Nick four years ago at a small backyard gathering in East LA. He appeared to be burning in his own skin, alone with his guitar and filled with a raw, emotional tension the likes of which I had rarely seen. It sent chills down my spine, and the experience never left me.

Recently, I saw Nick again at New York’s Webster Hall. He is newly sober, and the tension so bottled up all those years ago was unleashed. Nick delivered a raucous, inspired, and infectious performance. His energy and optimism lifted everyone in the room, and in turn, I believe we lifted him. The performance affected me equally, albeit in a different way. It will stay with me just as the other did - same words, different context. It may not impact the algorithm, but perhaps it will you. Check out the performances side by side (and the final clip is a little insight into his vulnerability, I guess we all care what people think, at least a little). Good job art. And great job Nick, thank you! by @hextongallery

Rodrigo Valenzuela is currently featured in "Telenovela," a group exhibition at Americas Society in New York City, curated by Aimé Iglesias Lukin. Featuring more than 50 works from the 1970s to the present, "Telenovela" explores the profound cultural, social, and political significance of telenovelas across the Western Hemisphere.

In "Maria TV", Valenzuela hired fifteen domestic workers to learn a script in the style of a telenovela episode and recorded their rehearsals. The resulting video documents the maids practicing their lines and grappling with the challenge of embodying their own livelihood through a fictionalized role. The women are unconvincing actors by design, demonstrating the distance between television and the real people it dramatizes. Valenzuela conceived Maria TV out of his interest in class representation across mass media, particularly how low- and middle-class workers are presented for upper-class consumption. The portrayal of service workers in telenovelas is a notable point of contention. Maids are recurring stereotypes in these shows, used as plot devices or as one-dimensional background characters rather than complex human beings. Despite their closeness to actual events, the melodrama of telenovelas often distorts their connection to the real world. Valenzuela exaggerates this phenomenon in the performance he constructed for Maria TV.

Since 2022, Hexton Gallery has partnered with Aspen Street Lodge to bring contemporary art into one of Aspen’s most distinctive residential settings.

Throughout the lodge, a rotating selection of works by Hexton artists is integrated into the interiors, placing contemporary art in conversation with the architecture and surrounding landscape.

The partnership extends beyond the works on view, with Aspen Street Lodge serving as a gathering place for the Hexton community over the years. Pictured here, views of the current installation alongside moments from Hexton’s five-year celebration.

I have been an investor in the Uhaul gallery for 27 years, so it was very gratifying to mount an exhibition in the back of a truck this past weekend. Thank you Jack Chase, James Sundquist and your team, you crushed it!

Join us in celebrating Larry Poons' 89th birthday today.

Poons’ connection to Aspen spans more than six decades, beginning with his time as an artist-in-residence at the Aspen Institute in 1965. His work remains part of Aspen’s cultural landscape today, including "Pecos" (2005), pictured here as currently installed at The Little Nell in Aspen.

This year, Hexton presented Poons’ work in our last show, "MATERIALITY," continuing a dialogue between his practice and Aspen that began more than 60 years ago.

Happy Birthday, Larry.

"The Powers: A Life in Art", directed by Tyler Oliver, will make its New York premiere at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) on Tuesday, September 29. The film features Larry Poons and Christo, whose works are also included in "MATERIALITY", currently on view at Hexton Gallery.

Long before Pop Art had a name or a market, John and Kimiko Powers were among the first to believe in it, drawn less to the work as commodity than to the artists themselves. Confidants to Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, and others, they helped shape an era while remaining, by choice, just outside the spotlight.

Woven from personal archives and never-before-seen conversations with the artists themselves, the documentary film "The Powers: A Life in Art" offers an intimate account of two collectors whose relationships with the artists they championed were as important as the works they acquired. As the art world hardened into market and status, the Powers held to a different standard, rooted in beauty, wonder, and human connection, and in the conviction that collecting, at its best, is an act of friendship.
