Fleeing is my love language

I was born a writer, the words weeping from skin, the pencil a sixth digit, always proud of the indent left. I have novels and transcripts and character sketches that started when I was still drawing pictures for my stories. My first picture book was about abortion (never one to shy from the topics that are hard!) and this week I found a green folder from 1996 with subplots and lists of words to use instead of cry: grief was always a second language for me, my first novel begins as the soil is hitting her mothers casket, as she pulls her shawl closer against the biting wind. It was stormy grey. It was romance. It was a world I didn’t understand, and yet, I did.

Wild to me we were always who we are, we just had to dig a little find our ways back. I’ve always known I’m a sucker for raw truths, will bang my head against a wall if you don’t go deep with me, that something about death calls to me like poetry. Not scared, but aware of its presence. I’ve always loved storytelling and spinning of lore and romance, especially the rom com 90s version is my favorite but also give me lovers after 70 years who’ve grown around each other like trees in the woods and let me wonder at them and marvel at all they have endured, at their scars. Did they choose each other in every life, every timeline? Isn’t life magic? Don’t you agree?

FORTY.

I wrote pages and pages in my journal the day before my birthday, line after line of what thirty was and processed an ending of a decade with a ceremony in my backyard. Just me and the chickens and padme, the sun and the magic of the universe. ✨✨✨ I set intentions, closed doors, and made difficult choices in my thirties. I was surrounds by the most beautiful local community for most of my decade, friends who are now family. Oh what a time to be alive!

Feeling so grateful, so thankful, so honored. One of my bests said 40 hits different and it’s what i keep coming back to. It feels expansive and wise and beautiful and I have cried many times over the privilege of getting to have lived this long and this full already. I am so excited for this next chapter and all the chapters to come and welcome all the goodness and joy and community and creativity and magic I can imagine and more.
