we become liberated when we learn to hear ourselves outside of the noise of other people / systems telling us who to be / how to act.

and for women of colour, this is an especially complex journey.

it requires shedding the expectations of people we care about,
unlearning the idea that self sacrifice is love,
and navigating the consequent family dynamics because of the change that creates in us.

but when we understand that the voice we've been listening to isn't our own,
and start on the journey of hearing ourselves,
even if it starts out as a whisper,
we start to live + move in alignment with our values

and that's liberating, healing + magical

when we have privilege, ignorance or neutrality is a choice

especially with the access to info available to us —

what often gets forgotten is that in the west, Black + Indigenous feminism has been calling for liberation for centuries, and these freedoms are intrinsically linked.

the language we need, the education we seek has been in front of us, but it's the stuff that's banned in schools, not highlighted, not regularly hitting NYT best sellers, etc.

bell hooks. Angela Davis. Maya Angelou. Mikki Kendall. Tricia Hersey. Robin Wall Kimmerer.

every once in a while, I step away from everything.

I come back to this work with fresh eyes
and then I go back into my ig archives
letting my past writing via posts + stories re-inspire me.

this helps me get clarity —
clarity on what's in / out of alignment with my values,
let's me see things differently,
get a fresh perspective on old ideas,
and supports a vibe check of sorts.

it helps me sort out what I want more / less of
moving forward, in my world + in my work.

so today I'm sharing what I've written before
that's re-inspired me today 🤎✨

the world might be a dumpster fire,
but staying close to what
brings us joy,
reminds of us of our fire,
and brings us together with others we love —
that's how we find hope.

for so long I was on the struggle bus
when it came to figuring out how to be more ME.

tbh I didn't even know who I was for a long time.

as the eldest daughter of immigrants,
my family pretty much told me who to be,
and I really just couldn't hear my own voice.

unlearning all that is such a process,
and it's ongoing — I've been doing this work intentionally for 5+ years,
and I still get triggered / repeat old patterns / lose myself on the regs.

but the 3 central things I find myself + my clients coming back to have been:

1/ figure out what you REALLY value / want to prioritize, outside of what's expected of you — and then use that as a compass for all the decisions you make in life + work

2/ learn how to believe in yourself + believe you DESERVE good things, which is an active practice every damn day and often requires reconditioning / relearning new ways of thinking

3/ surround yourself with sisterhood that is also doing this work, who can lift you up, cheer you on, and guide you. this work is not meant to be done alone, and the community element is ESSENTIAL to having it stick

this photoshoot was an intentional part of # 2 for me recently —
doing this shoot had me step WAY out of my comfort zone,
using photography as a medium to embody + express
the joy, fun, messiness + complexity of the work I do.

and because my work IS me, this was really raw + vulnerable for me 😭🤎

and im SO grateful to @kenda.alyakobiphoto for supporting me + bringing this to life 😍

there's a ton of business + life advice on the internet.

often one source conflicts / contradicts another
creating confusion + perpetuating our self doubt 🥲

and it also drowns out our intuition + inner voice —
which typically has the answers to the questions we're asking 👀

so instead of seeking out another person's success story,
and following a framework that worked for someone who doesn't look, think, or exist like us,

this is a call to get CLEAR on our:

⚡ values + priorities,
⚡ the stories we're telling ourselves,
⚡ the ones we want to tell our people, and
⚡ WHY we do the work we do.

affirming these truths, out loud and on paper will literally create huge shifts in your energy 🌻

this kind of clarity creates a filter for our life + business decisions, so you can ask yourself:

✔️ does doing this thing align with my values?
✔️ does this get me closer to what I want more / less of?

clarity gives us a map + directions to a life of alignment + joy,
and reduces our confusion.

these oppressive systems hold us back.

AND if we are privileged enough to create beautiful works — whether it's in the form of entrepreneurship, writing, gathering, making, or anything else —

we can choose HOW we do it.

we can choose how we make + distribute wealth from it,
we can choose to build rest + love into our processes,
and we can use our platforms to stand up for what we believe in.

we can choose to create with + for community.

and those shifts in our little ecosystems can have ripple effects on the larger system.

this work is so important.

reflect on the intention behind your choices in life, work + art:

are you making a choice to
prove something to someone else,
or to do what's truly best for you?

the former gives us drive + fuel in the short term,
but the latter sustains us for the long term 😍

this reflection is particularly important,

versus what we've been taught + told,
and what makes others comfortable / happy with us.
