If you’ve been watching our stories you know that we’re collaborating with @heyitskirn to bring you a ‘Spring Story Circle’ next week! It’s been a long and dark winter as we collectively witness and navigate chaos, uncertainty, and unprecedented censorship. We’re back this Spring and looking forward to holding space for women of colour to chat, share, and be in community as the seasons change. This is an informal space where we can gather, write, create, share, dream, and just BE with each other with no pressure to produce or perform! It’s happening virtually on Thursday May 9th, from 7:00 - 8:30 PM ET and we’d love for you to join in! It’s FREE and open to all women and femmes in our community. Bring a warm beverage and/or a tasty treat with you, come with an open heart, and let’s write, tell stories, and hang. Check the link in our bio for more info and tickets. We are almost full for this season so grab them fast! Wishing everyone love & light for the Spring season! 💜✨🌸 #shadesofbrowngirl #creativestorytelling #storycircle #writingandstorytelling #springgathering #virtualspace #brownwomen #communitybuilding

Happy Tails 🐾 “It's been a week since we brought baby Gloria (now named Maya!) home and I just wanted to give you a quick update. The way this sweet girl has settled into our home and hearts is wild, hard to believe it's only been a week. It's truly felt like she's belonged with us all along. She's acclimated to our home with ease, found all the best spots to snooze, and her purrs are the loudest we've ever heard! She had her first visit to our vet this morning, had a final round of vaccines and got a clean bill of health once again. We wanted to send you our heartfelt gratitude for rescuing her + taking such good care of her, we are so lucky. Thanks” - Kirn

Reflections from this month’s in-person Create & Connect event 💭 . . . Two weeks ago we hosted our first in-person workshop in 2 years in our home city of Toronto, Canada and it was nothing short of magical ✨✨. It was an intimate gathering, an opportunity to meet other Brown women, share stories, and create together. We laughed, we cried, we bonded over our shared experiences and emotions, we played with words and with colour, we stayed together well into the night, sharing and creating and sharing some more… To say we are grateful would not be enough. We left the evening with full hearts, and with greater vision for more offerings for our community. We will share more photos from this gathering soon, and are looking forward to hosting more of these gatherings, in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond! What kinds of events, meetups, and workshops would you love to attend? Let us know in the comments below! 👇🏾 . . . #shadesofbrowngirl #creativestorytelling #communityhealing #createandconnect #playingwithcolour #writing #poetry #monologue #mixedmedia #collage #colourpsychology #brownwomen #sisterhood

Hi, it’s Amrita here! I’m the woman behind SOBG and it’s been a while since I introduced myself! I’m a storyteller, creator, researcher, and educator. Over the past few years, while I’ve been building the SOBG community, I’ve also been working on completing my PhD in feminist geography. After a lot of working, waiting, pivoting, and reimagining over these last two years, I am so excited to share my project with all of you and invite you to get involved! Please share this post with your friends, family, peers, and colleagues! DM me, email me, or hit the link in my bio if you’re interested in more information! It’s almost March 8th! Join us this International Women’s Day for ‘Journeys in Visual Poetry’, a virtual visual storytelling experience, facilitated by the amazing @hemangishroffartist! • As brown women and femmes, sharing our stories and expressing our truths is often scary and uncomfortable. Challenging expectations, resisting oppressive systems, and reclaiming our bodies and voices often feels lonely and isolating. • This an invitation to come together in community as we each navigate our identities and stories. • For us, visual poetry is all about using visual arts elements to expand our storytelling vocabulary, finding creative ways to express the often inexpressible. It’s an individual and collective process that emphasizes how we’re all connected. • This is the start of something new for SOBG. While theatre & performance will always remain at the core of our work, we’re expanding the ways in which we engage with creative storytelling. • You don’t need any prior visual arts experience to join; please come as you are with materials you’ll easily find at home. • Join us! Sliding scale pricing and accessible tickets available. Visit the link in our bio. We can’t wait to see you there! • Artwork by @hemangishroffartist • #shadesofbrowngirl #community #creativestorytelling #visualpoetry #southasianwomen #browngirlartists

Brown women and femmes, join us on March 8th at 7 PM for a gentle evening of self-exploration through the medium of mixed media, collage and visual storytelling! • This workshop is facilitated by @hemangishroffartist, Toronto-based visual artist and artist educator. We connected with Hemangi last summer, during @nautankicreations ‘Artist Date’ series, where we fell in love with her creative approach to Brown Girl storytelling. As she herself says, “in my artistic practice, I decode the truths of being a woman in India. I explore how fabrics and femininity intersect in Indian society. As I explore my voice as a visual artist, my resolve becomes stronger everyday to talk about my lived experiences through my art.” • Tapping into the beautiful creative energy within this community, this workshop invites us to collectively explore ‘South Asian’ femininity in the form of mixed media visual art. Together, we’ll tell our stories by creating some visual poetry; creative writing to complement our art pieces will also be encouraged ✨. • Sliding scale pricing and accessible tickets are available – check out the link in our bio or DM us for more info! • We cannot wait to reconnect with you all! 💛 • Artwork by @hemangishroffartist • #shadesofbrowngirl #community #creativestorytelling #visualpoetry #southasianwomen #browngirlartists
