First day of her last year of high school. I know how we got here — how she got here.

We’ve been having fun, but does it feel like time has flown by? No, it does not. Our road has been rough at times; at times — many times, actually — I doubted myself and the decisions about her present and future that I’ve had to make on my own. I’ve never doubted Flora, though. I’ve never doubted her ability to adapt, adjust and find motivation even when the task ahead was thoroughly unmotivating.

We balance each other out. We’re partners. We work together in our own weird ways (in the best possible definition of weird).

It is a privilege to be Flora’s mom. Uma honra mesmo, filhota. Te amo imensamente 💕

I joined the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) shortly after arriving in the United States in 1998 for graduate school in journalism at Boston University. I didn’t know anyone in the business; NAHJ gave me a network, friends and a home.

In an industry that still struggles to welcome immigrants and Latinos in top leadership positions, NAHJ also gave me the confidence to keep charging ahead exactly as who I am and pave my own way.

I’m excited to travel to New Orleans July 21-24 for NAHJ’s 2026 conference and to moderate an important conversation featuring an all-star panel of Latina leaders: Jamie Stockwell, USA Today VP of news; Charo Henríquez, deputy Washington editor for strategy and operations at The New York Times; Marilu Galvez, president and general manager at WABC-TV ABC News; and Raquel Amparo, senior VP of content for Tegna.

Seventeen years ago today you arrived and changed my life, @florassaucier. You’ve brought me joy. You’ve brought me partnership. You’ve brought me renewed purpose. You’ve been my companion in hikes, at beaches, on waves, at musicals and museums, in cities big and small. You’ve been my guiding light, the person I wake up to be better for every day. I don’t remember how long it had been since we last saw each other — 15 years? More? I do remember when we met in Rio. We lived in the same neighborhood, loved the ocean, loved the sun, loved to party. We were immediately drawn to each other; we vibe exactly the same and our vibe is pure gold. A few days ago, I picked you up at a hotel in New York, we spent a few hours together and packed so much life in those few hours, and then I left for an annual work retreat while you stayed behind, taking care of my home and my daughter. That’s how real friendships are: There’s no time or distance that can ever tear them apart. Te amo, @vivianecamposmoraes! Que pena que o tempo ao seu lado foi curto, mas com certeza vou combinar aquela viagem ao Rio para lhe ver.
