NOLA dump ⚜️✨

Spent the last few days hearing war stories from the newsroom titans who opened doors for us, and meeting the generation shaping what comes next.

Huge thanks to @officialnahj for having me on stage, and to @newsterrier for moderating such a thoughtful book talk on “El Paso.”

I just wrapped up Poynter Institute’s Power of Diverse Voices writing seminar and I’m walking away feeling incredibly energized and empowered. There’s something special about being in a space where your voice is not only welcomed, but strengthened, challenged, and celebrated.

Over the past few days, I’ve stretched myself in ways I didn’t expect—digging deeper, writing more boldly, and embracing the parts of my story left unexamined. The seminar gave me new strategies, new confidence, and a community of storytellers who reminded me why our perspectives matter so much.

Most importantly, I wrote a piece I’m really proud of. I’m going to hold onto it a little longer but I’m already inspired to use what I learned to tackle some of the unfinished work from my week.

If there’s one lesson that truly stuck with me, it’s this: everything starts with a first draft.

And now… I get to say it: I’m officially a Powerful One. 💛

I remember when I listened to a podcast with @heyitsmefernanda and she told this story about her late husband’s phone. Such a meaningful thing, right?

There’s a new episode coming up tomorrow - but, for now, if you haven’t listened to the one with Fernanda, you are missing out. Such a bold and inspiring story!

Here’s my suggestion for the weekend - listening to amazing stories from women living abroad on @transplants.pod (hey, you can play them on your TV through our YouTube channel)

Little recap - these were my guests over the last few weeks:

🇺🇸 ➡️🇵🇹 @expat.onabudget she moved abroad solo on a budget at 56, from the US to Portugal - but before that, she walked away from an abusive marriage, addiction and a complicated family dynamic.

🇧🇷 ➡️🇹🇭@noplansfortmr she quit her job in Brazil to travel the world and settled, for now, in Thailand, with her Italian husband, that she met while traveling

🇮🇳 ➡️🇺🇸@aneridesaipatel she moved from India to the U.S to study - and rebuilt her life here from scratch after leaving a toxic arranged marriage

🇧🇷➡️🇺🇸@heyitsmefernanda moved from Brazil to the U.S. to study for a year, met her husband and built a life here - then everything felt apart when she lost her husband and started over raising her daughter by her own.

🇧🇬➡️🇺🇸Milena Berry - moved from Bulgaria to the U.S. to study and today she is a CEO. She built a career in tech as an immigrant and raised four kids with her wife.

✅ And while living abroad is the common ground, these stories are not a manual on how to move to another country. These are stories about chasing dreams and living a meaningful life.

I always learn so much with my guests - and I hope you can learn and get inspired as well!

62 of poetry: Day 14. “A um ausente,” by Carlos Drummond de Andrade read by journalist and author Fernanda Santos. Thanks so much @heyitsmefernanda for this gift of poetry. Please find the translation to English at the end of this post. For those of you who might be tuning in for the first time. We started this challenge of reading one poem a day to help fundraise to fully fund the Nick Oza Visual Fellowship created by @altavozlab.The fellowship will honor the legacy of Pulitzer price winner photojournalist @nickoza by creating a one year opportunity for an emerging or mid-career community photojournalists to delve into a project for a year. They will receive mentorship, $15,000 in funding and support. You can donate today by finding the DONATE link in my BIO or visiting altavozlab.com “To an absent one,” by Carlos Drummond de Andrade.

I’m right to miss you,
I’m even right to blame you.
There was an implicit pact you broke
for leaving without saying goodbye.
You shattered that pact.
You destroyed life in general, simple acquiescence
to live and explore
the paths of obscurity
without deadline, consultation or provocation
until the limit of fallen leaves at the time they drop. You anticipated the hour.
The hand of your watch gone crazy, maddening our hours.
What else more serious could you have done
than the act without sequel, the act itself,
the act we don’t dare or even know how to dare or even know how to dare
because after it, there is nothing?

I’m right to miss you,
for our shared times in easy conversation,
simple handshakes, not even that, your voice
modulating ordinary and familiar syllables that always offered certainty and safety.

Yes, I miss you.
Yes, I blame you because you did
the unforeseen in the laws of friendship and nature,
not even allowing us the right to ask
why did you do it, why did you leave?

Introducing @heyitsmefernanda - our guest this week!

When Fernanda Santos first moved to the U.S., she had a clear plan: study journalism and return to Brazil.

But everything changed after a chance encounter at a job fair. She met the love of her life, decided to stay, and built an extraordinary career, becoming the first Brazilian staff writer at The New York Times, contributing to major publications, publishing a book, and now serving as Editor-in-Chief at The 19th News.

But Fernanda’s story is not just about professional milestones; it’s also about navigating love, loss, and identity as an immigrant.

After losing her husband to cancer, she found herself starting over again - this time as a widow and single mother, raising her daughter, and searching for a new sense of “home” in another country.

In this episode, we talk about how Fernanda rebuilt her life, how she found confidence in her voice, how grief reshaped her story, and how she eventually found love again - without losing herself in the process.

Listen to the full episode on your favorite podcast player or watch it on YouTube!
