Years ago I offhandedly mentioned that I frequently poke around eBay and such to see if I can find the only historical item I would love to actually own: one of the counter-culture “Frodo Lives” pins from the 60s. I think there’s actually proof of me talking about this on @tolkienaboutpod explaining it’s a culmination of anti-war sentiment and the resurgence of the popularity of LOTR following its reprinting in paperback. Anyway, the point being, I’ve both expressed this desire and also had kinda given up on ever finding one. But @heyjoshdaniel found one, in a twist of bizarre train travel kismet, and got it for me. I could explain how this makes me feel but also @mcscan had the foresight to have his camera out so I guess you can see for yourself. In the full video I think I say “I wish my bangs weren’t pinned back” like twenty times, but also, this was a huge surprise and I was about to get ready for bed!!! Can you believe @heyjoshdaniel remembered that I wanted this!?!? My best friend!! The very best friend in the world!!!!! And I cannot believe the pin was made on St Marks in New York where I spent so, so many formative young adult hours. It all feels surreal. So, now I have an answer for “most treasured possession” in a very One Ring kind of way. And that’s how my trip to New York was! 👼 by @heyjoshdaniel

no one was sweeter than sweet ebony blake.

what a light you were, what a love you lived, what a bliss you radiated. ebony was one of those hearts that had a, like, electromagnetic field around it –– you couldn’t help but orbit the sun of her spirit. I miss you deeply here, but I feel so viscerally the warmth of your love from beyond. albert camus once said, “death does not get in the way of friendship,” and you, my beautiful friend, are proving him right, to the shock of no one lucky enough to have won the lottery that was knowing you.

the last picture here is us on what was, without a doubt, the most trying travel day of 2.5 years on the road –– it took a handful of us about 24 hours to get to des moines, IA, and no tea, no shade to all the iowans I deeply I love, but usually after 24 hours, you’re ready for a location a tad more exotic than the american great plains. I don’t remember being exasperated that day, I don’t remember being tired, I don’t remember anything –– except laughing with ebony blake. that was who she was: making you feel like you were home no matter where you were, including (and maybe most astonishingly) an airport chili’s.

thank you for being home, no matter where we were. thank you for the love, the laughter, the life. thank you reminding me that what makes us is what ends us –– our precious, precarious time on this planet is defined by its ephemerality, framed by the fact that at some point, the show closes and the curtain falls. what an unbelievable stroke of luck for all of us to have played in this company of humanity alongside you, my friend. grateful, grateful, grateful 💙

on thursday night, to a sold out crowd, I had my solo debut here in the greatest city on earth, and to say I feel astonished, grateful, lucky, overwhelmed, alive, I dunno, it all risks sounding real maudlin real quick, but here’s one thing I know for certain:

no one does it alone.
so, I want to shout out people without whom I could have never done this.

know them, HIRE THEM, and love them as much as I do. no, really: do it!!!

to every person who was there at tgr42 or watched online, I love you, and in the spirit of the show, I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to adequately communicate my gratitude. for now, the seemingly paltry english phrase “thank you” will have to barely suffice. 💙 by @heyjoshdaniel

okay but for real: one day in a few years, you’re going to want to be able to say, “omg, I saw khadija sankoh live at the green room 42 BEFORE she blew up. also, what was that other guy’s name again? the loud one who spoke at a sort of illegible tempo? oh ‘josh DANIELSSSSS.’ definitely two daniels. not just one. plural! do you think he’s OK?”

JUST JOSHIN’! my last name IS indeed singular, but no one is more singular than THEE inimitable KHADIJA SANKOH, who’ll be joining me at my SHOW in just under TWO WEEKS!
