Working on Best New Chefs and getting to meet some of the most extraordinary talent in the country is always the highlight of my year but this year was even better, because not only did I get to work on capturing footage for and planning the promotion of the package but I also got to scout in Los Angeles and contribute to the overall list. In my time scouting I had many delicious meals with bites I still crave, but the one I couldn’t stop thinking about was at @barrasantosla. Helmed by Melissa Lopez, it had a menu with so many hits and such a great vibe that you kind of know you’ll have to go back again and again to fully take it all in. In fact, in the months since my first scouting meal and the BNC ceremony on Tuesday I’ve gone back many, many times despite the hour+ commute each way from my house (that’s true love in Angeleno). In all those months of having Barra and Melissa in my orbit, I’ve come to learn that she’s not only an incredible chef but also an amazing and kind person, who puts her team and their success first. She’s exactly what we want to see in our Best New Chefs and I was so happy and proud to see her walk across the stage with her little chef’s jacket on Tuesday.

Now for the other stars in this carousel, @rishimanojkumar and @zubairmohajir, our history is a lot shorter, but even during our one day shooting together it was easy to see why @karemizu chose them as Best New Chefs. Not only are they creating dishes that perfectly blend Indian and Mexican flavors, but they’re also incredibly knowledgeable and reverent of both cultures, and are overflowing with creativity and ideas to keep their restaurant evolving. They’re also both so fun and game for anything, like how Rishi let me rock up to his house and follow him around all day for a sponsored video, or how they were both stoked to play a game of “rank our covers” with me. They have such an amazing energy that we put *them* on the cover (even though we rarely feature people).
