Yesterday, I was granted two minutes to address the U-M Board of Regents on the matters of campus racism and institutional repression of student activism. I remain thankful for @safeumich, @jvpumich, @geo_3550, and the entire @tahrirumich Coalition for their organizing efforts in solidarity with Palestinian self-determination and the divestiture of institutional resources in apartheid regimes. #freepalestine 🇵🇸 by @hfdavis

Grateful to @j.m.cox and @cbcfinc for the opportunity to moderate “Our Numbers, Our Narrative: Power, Policy, and Progress through Black-Led Data” during the American Legislative Conference last month. Brilliant insights from @iamkristinpowell of @blackfutureslab and @marshawnwolley of Obsidian Research Insights on community-based approaches to data collection and analysis in partnership with Black communities. #lategram by @hfdavis

At least one measure of a nation are the conditions of its most vulnerable, especially of its children.

According to 2024 data from the Department of Health and Human Services, this country consistently demonstrates a lack of care or the provision of access to resources that would remedy disparities rendering Black children at the bottom of nearly every major category when compared to youth from other racial groups. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children maintains that Black children represent nearly 33% of all missing children despite being 14% of the population. In 2022, a national study by KIDS COUNT® Data Center reported 84% of Black fourth graders did not read at proficiency levels, 91% of Black eighth graders tested below proficient in math, and Black students were most likely to be suspended and expelled from school.

In no uncertain terms, this nation continues to refuse its obligations to protect and defend Black children. So what’s worth celebrating exactly? 250 years of enslavement, apartheid, systemic violence, and callous disregard for the well-being of Black babies? Because that is exactly what we have seen, repeatedly, with little to no reprieve and certainly no reparation. Frederick Douglass raised the question “what to the negro is your 4th of July?” and the United States has always answered the same: “it may be nothing to you, but it is everything to us, and we will die with the lie that ‘America is great’ no matter what it costs you.”

There is nothing nationalistic worth celebrating. Not today, not ever. Because the truest version of a patriot, to return to Douglass, are a people who love their country by rebuking its sins and not excusing them.

Grateful to @jaelincollier for trusting me to suit up for @currystreetstudios to be his second shooter for @nhaainc’s Legacy Blue Gala last month. As a scholar of higher education and a creative, it was truly a once in a lifetime experience to witness and document a powerful evening of love and appreciation for one of our preeminent HBCUs. Here are some of the highlights, including the 40 Under 40 crew, honorees, and dignitaries with a brief cameo at the end 📸

I first met Comrade Andrew Joseph, Jr. at the @thedreamdefenders annual congress in 2017. He, his wife Deanna and daughter Deja shared the story of their son and brother, Andrew Joseph III, who was killed due to police negligence and disregard for his safety. Years later we would reconnect in Los Angeles through the Justice Families work with @blmgrassroots as he and Deanna organized and supported families impacted by state and state-sanctioned violence.

From the very first moment I heard his voice, as you hear in this clip from my movement archive, it was clear that he loved his family and he loved our people. His presence in their lives, as well as our own, will be deeply missed. Let us rest well knowing he will finally reunite with his son and that his impact and legacy will never be forgotten.
