$“What does cinema mean?” A question asked in a Syrian film, in the midst of a mind slowly fracturing under war. Maybe cinema is a truth told through a lie. A place where we are allowed to see — and feel — everything at once: laughter, tears, and death. We turn to it to escape. But some realities refuse to be escaped. They follow us — into the screen, into the story, into the silence between scenes. Why does Agnes feel like the agonised mothers of my countries? Mothers who endured loss and displacement, more times than they have been allowed to rest, who have learned to gather their lives into bags at a moment’s notice, again and again, across generations. Why do I see our children in Hamnet — in the quiet courage of bodies too small for the weight they carry, in the way death arrives too early, too suddenly, too often? And why do I see us in William — those who leave not because they want to, but because staying means vanishing? I have packed suitcases to escape, more than to travel, to discover, to live. To stay is to risk becoming a memory. What kind of choice is that? And Una — the most ancient herb: “You defy venom, you defy the horror that stalks the land.” But the horror is already here. It walks our lands, breathes through our days, settles into our bodies. What resists it? Is it imagination? Is it art? Is it the way we hold each other, even as everything breaks? Is it the memory of forests, seas, rivers that still recognise us? Or is it something we have not yet remembered how to name? They are haunting us. In our laughter, fear, sleep. They are haunting our land, and our dead. My father is buried in the south. Not in his hometown, but in a land that has always welcomed many, where people carry open hearts, and the land itself seems to hold them too. Sweet-scented geranium grows out of his grave. From there, you can see the fields of the south, and its blue sea. A place told, again and again, to empty itself. A place never allowed to rest. And I think of him — of the ground that holds him, of whether even the dead are allowed to remain. What resists this? What heals this? What is the herb that can stand against this poison? Where do we find it? by @hibahussein92$
