810 Broadway is a pretty perfect little survivor from Saskatoon’s boom years.

Built in 1910, the Stewart Building was designed as a classic boomtown storefront and became home to Stewart’s Drug Store, which stayed in the building for decades. Over the years, the storefront was altered, including a major redesign in the 1960s, before later owners worked to return the exterior closer to its original look.

That restoration included moving the entrance back, repairing and repointing the brick, restoring the cornice, uncovering the original maple floor, and salvaging the 1910 decorative tin ceiling that had been hidden under later ceilings.

Now it’s home to Soul Paper, which moved to Broadway in 2024 and feels like an oddly perfect fit for a building with that much tactile history: fountain pens, inks, notebooks, cards, art supplies, and beautiful paper in an age when so much of our lives lives on screens.

I was meeting my friend at Broadway Café this morning for breakfast, as I was walking toward the café, I noticed this beautiful Chevy Impala perfectly situated in front of the café. (Does anyone know the year of this car? 🤷)

It just was the perfect setting with all the fall colours and it just made me think of simpler times.

The story of this Dairy Queen actually starts before Dairy Queen!

Emma and Norm Kemp were already part of Saskatoon’s early drive-in restaurant scene, running the Nite Hawk on 8th Street before eventually opening this DQ in 1959.

They were part of a much bigger shift happening along 8th at the time, which saw a lot of restaurants, drive-ins and other businesses catereing to a more car-centric city.

That history is still scattered all along the street today. This DQ is just one of the most recognizable pieces of it.
